As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship infrared spectroscopy in the United States is $17.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an internship in infrared spectroscopy?

An Internship in Infrared Spectroscopy is a temporary, hands-on position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience working with infrared spectroscopy techniques and equipment. Interns typically assist in laboratory settings, learning how to operate spectrometers, prepare samples, analyze spectra, and interpret results. This experience helps them understand how infrared spectroscopy is used to study the chemical composition and molecular structure of various materials. Such internships are valuable for those pursuing careers in chemistry, materials science, or related fields.

What types of projects or experiments can I expect to work on during an internship in infrared spectroscopy?

As an intern in Infrared Spectroscopy, you will typically assist with sample preparation, calibration of spectrometers, and routine analysis of materials to determine their molecular composition. You may also be involved in troubleshooting equipment, developing protocols for new experiments, and analyzing data using specialized software. Collaborating closely with research scientists and laboratory technicians, you’ll gain hands-on experience with both theoretical and practical aspects of IR spectroscopy. This exposure not only builds technical skills but also offers insight into research workflows and teamwork in a laboratory setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in infrared spectroscopy?

To thrive in an Internship Infrared Spectroscopy role, you generally need a background in chemistry or a related science, with foundational knowledge in spectroscopy principles. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software (such as Origin or MATLAB), and experience with FTIR spectrometers are typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative research settings. These skills are crucial for accurately collecting and interpreting spectral data, ensuring reliable research outcomes, and contributing to scientific projects.

What is the difference between Internship Infrared Spectroscopy vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectInternship Infrared SpectroscopyLaboratory Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in chemistry or related fieldAssociate's or bachelor's degree in science or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, educational institutions, industry internshipsVarious labs including medical, industrial, research facilities
Job FocusLearning and assisting with infrared spectroscopy techniquesPerforming routine lab tests, sample preparation, data recording

Internship Infrared Spectroscopy roles focus on gaining hands-on experience with infrared analysis, often as part of an educational program. Laboratory Technicians perform routine lab tasks across various scientific fields, including spectroscopy. While both roles involve laboratory work, internships are more learning-oriented, whereas technician roles are more operational and routine-based.

Job description

The Department of Psychology at Hofstra University invites applications for an anticipated full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Clinical Psychology beginning September 2025. The position is primarily for the PhD Program in Clinical Psychology (as a core faculty member of our APA-approved program; 50% or more of teaching load), with additional responsibilities to the undergraduate psychology program. Candidates with interests in any area of child, adolescent, or adult psychopathology or psychological treatment, are encouraged to apply. Our PhD program follows the scientist-practitioner model and faculty members’ clinical orientation represents the spectrum of cognitive behavioral therapy. The ideal applicant will complement the existing faculty members’ areas of expertise. We are especially interested in the following specialties: relationship therapy, substance abuse, adolescent mental health, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, treatment process research, and use of technology to deliver psychotherapy.

Candidates should show clear evidence of research productivity along with the potential to develop an independent program of research, and a significant commitment to teaching and supervision at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Faculty members are encouraged to supervise a specialty clinic within their area of expertise within a few years of starting the position. The teaching load is 18 credits annually, comprised of traditional courses, externship/internship supervision, and dissertation supervision.

There is a variety of collaborative research resources available to psychology faculty on and off campus. A qualified candidate may have shared access to the department’s new neurophysiology lab, which houses a B-Alert X24 20-channel mobileEEGsystem, BIOPACfunctional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system and BIOPACequipment for measurement of skin conductance and heart rate variability. Faculty can also request access to the Behavioral Research in Business Lab, which includes 27 workstations with cameras, audio/voice equipment, eye-tracking capabilities, and a variety of other biometric options. Hofstra faculty also have strong collaborations with the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the broader Northwell Health system on Long Island, with the potential for a new faculty member to receive cross-appointment and access to healthcare settings as appropriate to their research.

Hofstra University is located on Long Island in close proximity to New York City (25 miles east of Manhattan), with its wealth of business, entertainment, and cultural opportunities. Our faculty and students have diverse backgrounds and we strongly encourage diverse applicants.
