Listed within this posting is the anticipated salary range for this position, plus variable incentive compensation. THE OPPORTUNITY:
Harford Mutual is looking for a rotational Intern who will rotate through and support the Underwriting, Loss Control, and Claims teams during summer of 2027. This position is for full-time students who are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing career opportunities in Risk & Insurance Management, Occupational Safety, EHS, Business or related field.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Underwriting (Weeks 1 - 3)
  • Support Underwriting through the performance of specific tasks - including, but not limited to underwriting of new business files, processing policy changes, and review of supplemental information (loss runs, MVR's, financial data, inspections, etc.)
  • Receive hands-on training in a variety of areas including Harford Mutual appetite, target classes, underwriting processes, systems, and general insurance knowledge
  • Attend agency visits with Business Development Specialist, to gain knowledge of the insurance policy life cycle.
  • Participant in various Underwriting team meetings such a Large Loss review, Large Account Renewal and weekly business unit sync ups
Loss Control (Weeks 4 - 6)
  • Conduct Loss Control survey ride-alongs to gain exposure to the different industries, risk characteristics and field survey practices.
  • Assist with loss control data reporting and analytics related to survey reports, recommendations, and post-survey underwriting decisions.
  • Use survey, recommendation, and loss trend data to research tools, technology, or process improvements that could be incorporated to help prevent losses at a portfolio level.
Claims (Weeks 7 - 9)
  • Support Claims Operations by performing a variety of claim-related tasks, including taking First Notices of Loss (FNOL), assisting with low-complexity first-party claims, reviewing policies and damage documentation, conducting claim file research, and supporting operational and system-related processes. Gain exposure to claim handling workflows, customer service, coverage analysis, and claim documentation standards.
  • Conduct Loss Trend Analysis and Operational Research by reviewing claim data to identify emerging trends, common causes of loss, and potential areas of risk. Develop insights and recommendations that support loss mitigation efforts, liability and coverage evaluations, recovery opportunities, and strategic initiatives within Claims, Underwriting, and Loss Control.
