The Office of Equity is charged with monitoring and helping to ensure employment and educational equity district-wide. The Office has primary responsibility for investigating reports of possible violations of internal policies regarding bias-based conduct and sexual misconduct; and engaging in proactive efforts to prevent such conduct through training, instruction, alternative dispute resolution, coaching, and other forms of intervention. In addition, the Office responds to disability and religious accommodation requests (primarily from employees), and partners with the Office of Opportunity Gaps to ensure school and Central Office decisions are held to an equity lens.
Responsibilities- In partnership with the Director of Compliance and Title IX Coordinator, conduct investigations of allegations of bias-based conduct or sexual misconduct brought by employees, students, parents, and other third parties based on the protected classes under the district’s internal policies, including ancestry, disability, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, retaliation, sex, and sexual orientation, including:
- Conduct intake interviews,
- Conduct interviews with parties, including investigative meetings,
- Collect and review related documentation,
- Make findings of fact consistent with BPS policy,
- Write clear and comprehensive reports and other correspondence, including notification and closure letters,
- Draft thoughtful and well-reasoned recommendations to address the findings, and
- Document the process as appropriate.
- Provide effective and supportive coaching to operations staff, school administrators, central office supervisors and others who may be designated to conduct investigations and respond to incidents and interactions where bias may be a factor.
- Ensure thorough, prompt, accurate case documentation, including investigations, investigative reviews, consultations, intakes, and referrals, in partnership with the Equity Manager and other administrative staff.
- Supervise staff as assigned, such as student interns.
- Serve as the Office of Equity representative on district-wide cross-functional teams to apply an equity lens, which may include (but not be limited to) working groups on employee CORI reviews and employee compensation review.
- Lead or assist with special projects, such as annual reports, employee signoff on policies, grant writing, training delivery, and bias prevention programming in schools.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Demonstrated knowledge of civil rights laws in employment and educational settings, including disparate treatment and various forms of discriminatory and sexual harassment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience with program design and project management, working under tight deadlines to achieve goals.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment both within the Office and across the district, initiating and maintaining cooperative relationships with individuals at every level of the internal organization as well as students, families, and external stakeholders.

- Prior work experience in the field of urban public education and/or knowledge of the Boston Public Schools.
- Proven leadership skills.
- Demonstrated experience advising supervisors and managers.
- Demonstrated experience managing a large volume of investigative casework.
- Advanced degree in Human Resources, Education, Law, Policy, Public Administration or other relevant field.
- Working knowledge of Google and Microsoft Office products, including Google Docs, Drive, Calendar, Sheets, and Slides, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese.
- Background in mediation, restorative justice, or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
- Results-oriented team player who can work collaboratively, but is also able to take initiative and work independently.
- Ability to maintain neutrality and confidentiality.
