What is an internship FIFO?

An Internship FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) is a work arrangement commonly found in industries like mining, oil and gas, and construction, where interns travel to a remote work site for a set period and then return home for time off. This schedule allows interns to gain hands-on experience at locations that may not be accessible for daily commuting. FIFO internships often include accommodation, meals, and sometimes transport, making them ideal for students or graduates looking to experience remote or regional work environments. These roles help interns develop practical skills and knowledge relevant to their field while adapting to unique workplace schedules and conditions.

What can I expect from the work schedule and living arrangements during an internship FIFO?

Internship FIFO roles typically involve working in remote locations, such as mining sites or construction projects, where interns follow a rostered schedule (e.g., two weeks on, one week off). Accommodation and meals are usually provided on-site, and you may share facilities with other team members. The work environment is collaborative and fast-paced, offering exposure to various departments and hands-on experience. Adapting to the FIFO lifestyle and managing time away from home can be challenging but also rewarding, providing unique professional and personal growth opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship FIFO worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship FIFO worker, you generally need relevant academic background or training in your field, a willingness to work in remote locations, and basic safety certifications. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, software, and safety systems—such as MS Office, project management platforms, or mining/construction equipment—is often required. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills are crucial for adjusting to remote environments and collaborating with diverse crews. These capabilities are essential for maintaining productivity, safety, and well-being while working on rotational shifts away from home.
