Job description

The PE Controls Engineer 1 is responsible for the design, configuration, integration, and implementation of manufacturing process control systems. This includes supporting process changes and projects to accommodate new models or products and to improve the operational efficiency of manufacturing equipment. Skilled, hands-on problem solving combined with software programing of various types of controls components. The PE Controls Engineer 1 also works directly with the production engineering and maintenance teams to provide enhanced troubleshooting and controls software support for manufacturing equipment downtime issues.

Position Responsibilities may include:

  •  Support manufacturing process control systems and automation. 
  • Understand and troubleshoot various PLC, HMI, VFD and servo programs and modify as required. 
  • Diagnose issues with plant Ethernet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT and DeviceNet communication networks. 
  • Learn the SCADA and MES system of the plant and understand the data exchange process requirements between PLC and MES. 
  • Learn and use Virtual Machines and servers to perform support activities. 
  • Under direct supervision, provide controls support to resolve manufacturing equipment failures, faults, and runtime issues in a timely manner to minimize downtime and lost production. 
  • Assist in identifying root causes of equipment issues and develop solutions to eliminate reoccurrence. 
  • Interpret and modify electrical drawings and schematics. 
  • Follow established processes to increase the operational efficiency of manufacturing equipment. 
  • Document program changes and improvements for lessons learned and group communication. 
  • Interface well with other teams to solve production problems. 
  • Work with production engineering and maintenance teams in troubleshooting and with repairs. 
  • Assist in preparing technical reports and presentations. 
  • Analyze problems in a high-volume production atmosphere. 
  • Adapt well to changing responsibilities and work environment. 
  • Perform additional projects/duties to support ongoing business needs.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Beginner Knowledge of electrical practices and safety codes 
  • Ability to learn manufacturing controls systems and automation, several types of controls and automation components 
  • Ability to learn PLC, HMI, VFD, and servo programming skills 
  • Ability to attempt debug and troubleshooting after requesting assistance 
  • Good communication skills – verbal and written 
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and analytical skills 
  • Effective organizational and time management skills including prioritization skills 
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people and in a team setting 
  • Ability to apply good judgement, strong work ethics and integrity on the job.

Competency:

Experience:

  • Internships/co-ops/related course projects preferred 
  • Basic PLC, HMI, VFD, Servo programming / project experience 
  • Basic SCADA, Ignition, Python Programming, SQL experience 

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET), or other relevant Bachelors in Engineering degree with controls focus required.
