Job description

Description:

This position operates assigned vehicles and light equipment in the maintenance of city rights-of-way, cemeteries and other properties and in the collection and transport of refuse.

  • Operates a truck and trailer to transport equipment and materials.
  • Operates a truck and trailer, read-end loader, or other equipment along a predetermined route to collect refuse.
  • Operates a tractor with bush hog and other grounds maintenance equipment to mow grass on city rights-of-way, in the city cemetery, and on other city properties.
  • Operates hand and power tools in the performance of ground maintenance duties.
  • Plans and prunes trees and shrubs.
  • Operates a backhoe and dump truck to close and open graves in the cemetery.
  • Maintains radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Assists in traffic control at work sites.
  • Performs related duties.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in grounds and cemetery maintenance.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and light equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driverโ€™s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
