Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine was established in 2012 upon a robust foundation of collaboration between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching health systems - Beacon Kalamazoo and Bronson Healthcare, which includes Bronson Children's Hospital.
Opportunity
At Western Michigan University School of Medicine, the Department Chair provides academic Leadership for the discipline. The chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences reports to the Chief Academic Officer and is appointed by the Dean. The chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences should have a record of sustained accomplishments and evidence of leadership in a basic science discipline and medical education and is expected to maintain a record of personal success in the discipline and participate in teaching, scholarly activity and research, and professional and community service. The chair must serve as a role model for and represent both faculty and learners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintains and leads a department that fosters and supports a large interdisciplinary community of faculty educators, residents, and students.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, mentorship, administrative supervision, and evaluation of all employed, contracted, and volunteer faculty in the Department.
  • Provides direction in the design, development and management of the curriculum in the basic medical sciences.
  • Serves as the Assistant Dean for Foundations of Medicine and is responsible for defining, assigning, and managing the educational roles and instructional activities of biomedical sciences faculty as necessary in order to meet the curricular and accreditation needs of the medical school with regard to the core basic sciences.
  • Oversees curricular enhancements through implementation of adult learning principles and integration of advanced technologies into curriculum delivery by the biomedical science faculty.
  • Develop interdisciplinary research teams that will produce significant and innovative research.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the basic science curriculum.
  • Serves as an advocate for educational programs within the medical school and works effectively with other Chairs and assistant and associate deans to provide vision and long-term planning for the educational mission of the medical school.
  • Serves at the pleasure of the dean of the medical school.
  • Demonstrates the highest level of personal and professional commitment, enthusiasm, integrity, and support of the medical school and its mission, vision, and values.
  • Aligns the department with all aspects of the medical school; and strives to achieve excellence in all aspects of department operations.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctorate in a basic science discipline (PhD or MD/PhD) with a minimum of 10 years work experience required.
  • Meets qualifications for appointment at Full Professor at WMed.
