Job description

OVERVIEW
JOB TITLE: OISS Graduate Assistant
LOCATION: St. Paul Campus
PAY RATE: $16.50 per Hour
HOURS: 20 hours (during the academic year)
JOB SUMMARY:
The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) is looking for a Graduate Assistant to join our team!
The GA position is open to students enrolled in a graduate program at the University of St. Thomas. We're looking for someone who is interested in event planning/management and social media management, in addition to providing administrative support.
The successful candidate should:

  • possesses strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • be able to work in an open office environment with many interruptions
  • desire to develop intercultural communication and leadership skills.

This is a 20-hour per week (during the academic year), non-benefited graduate assistantship position, and is required to physically work on-campus. Required to work over J-term and during the summer to prepare for orientation.
POSITION DESCRIPTION & RESPONBILITIES:
  • Lead programs and events organized by the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) that support and engage international students.
  • Work closely with programming staff and intern to organize, host, and run the events, including graduate student programming, Friendship family, and Thanksgiving program.
  • Attend programming events unless class conflicts.
  • Put together the OISS weekly newsletter with relevant events and information.
  • Develop and design promotions for programs organized by OISS or other offices to international student audiences using Canva.
  • Coordinate with the social media intern to create content and enact timely posting on social media platforms (Instagram and TikTok) for OISS events, updates, news, and important information.
  • Plan one monthly on-campus programming event that requires more planning (coffee hour, etc.).
  • Co-lead other programs organized by OISS that benefit international students. May include partnerships with other offices and occasional evening assignments.
  • Cover the Global Learning Center front desk as needed.
  • Work with the staff orientation leader during the summer to organize orientation in the fall and spring. Plan and coordinate the "Orientation Connect" series.
  • Other duties assigned-administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS
An understanding of cultural differences, intercultural communication and issues of culture conflict; excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; Extensive knowledge of existing social media platforms; strong attention to detail; ability to work independently as well as in a team; ability to work on several projects simultaneously, balance priorities, and meet deadlines; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work successfully with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds;
Required qualifications:
  • Able to start immediately and to work 20 hours/week for the duration of 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Present enrollment in a graduate program at the University of St. Thomas.
  • Candidates must be in good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA)
  • Knowledge of Canva and Excel

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience living abroad
  • Experience in student leadership roles
  • Video/audio editing skills
  • Marketing experience
  • Multilingual

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
