The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

The primary role of the ISSS Graduate Assistant position is to assist the staff of the Global Engagement Office's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) unit, in serving international students and scholars at UNCG. The Graduate Assistant will have the opportunity to gain well-rounded experience in an international education office setting. For a candidate considering a career in the international education field, the office may provide opportunities for advisor shadowing, international programming participation, and conference attendance.

The position responsibilities include:
1. Assisting in the collection, preparation, and review of immigration relevant documents utilizing email, Slate System, and Terra Dotta Case Management System.
2. Assisting with tracking status of prospective international students' applications to support staff in providing fast and accurate communication to admitted students.
3. Serve as the first point of contact for international students and scholars who visit the Global Engagement office. They assess needs, assist with requests, and direct students/scholars to the appropriate staff member.
4. Support in cultural programming for international student and scholars including but not limited to International Education Week, ISSS workshops, International Student Orientation and other special projects as assigned.
5. Monitoring the unit's general email inbox and respond to requests in a timely manner
6. Other administrative tasks and specific projects assigned based on office needs
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
Candidate must be an active UNCG graduate student enrolled full-time and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Skills needed for this position include:
1. Experience in project coordination, administrative tasking, front desk skills
2. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
3. Excellent communication skills
4. Strong empathy skills to support the needs of a culturally diverse student and scholar populations
5. Comfortable working with speakers for whom English is a second language
6. Working knowledge of a second language other than English
7. Comfort using Canva or other graphic design system
8. Comfort with Microsoft Systems including Excel

Preference is given to candidates who show interest in the field of international education, international experiences, and foreign languages. Flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to respond appropriately to multiple priorities are very important for the success of these GA positions.
