Overview
Reporting to the Associate Director of International Scholars, the international scholar advisor will advise individuals and departments on U.S. immigration regulations and compliance, including preparing, processing and maintaining electronic and paper records and documents in support of immigration casework. The International Scholar Advisor serves as a resource to departments and other hiring officials on hosting J-1 visitors and hiring H-1B and other non-immigrant employees. The International Scholar Advisor assists in the planning and implementation of programs for international scholars. Collaborate and facilitate immigration and orientation sessions and other programs and support student areas. Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Advise on and lead assigned casework processing for H-1B employees, J-1s, E-3s, TNs, PR applicants and other relevant visa holders.
Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)* for the J-1 Exchange Visitor program and as Designated School Official (DSO) for the F-1 program under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State.
Ensure, promote, and support institutional compliance with state, local, and federal laws and regulations as it relates to the immigration status of international scholars and students engaged in university related academic and/or research activity.
Use SEVIS, Peoplesoft, Sunapsis, and other systems and apps to prepare and process immigration documents and maintain accurate records to comply with regulatory reporting.
Maintain relations with U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State's Exchange Visitor Program.
Maintain relations with department hiring managers and partner offices (Dean of the Faculty, Human Resources, Global Financial Services, Global Safety and Security, etc.) as relevant to casework.
Assist in the planning and implementation of programs for international scholars. Collaborate and facilitate immigration and orientation sessions and other programs and support student areas. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications
Bachelor's degree required plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of international scholar regulatory advising and processing.
Knowledge of immigration rules, standards, regulations and laws regarding H-1B, J-1, and other non-immigrant visa statuses and the hiring of foreign nationals in the U.S. Familiarity with F-1 and J-1 student regulations.
Demonstrated proficiency and strong command of navigating database management systems and platforms related to employment-based immigration processes, including SEVIS.
Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills.
U.S. citizen or legal permanent residence required for ARO/DSO designation as required by federal regulation. Must pass a criminal background check as required by federal regulations.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and a professional demeanor.
Ability to communicate in a cross-cultural environment with sensitivity to the diversity and complexity of international scholar and student issues and concerns.
Ability to work as a member of a team and under pressure
Ability to be flexible and adaptable in work schedule, assignments
Ability to work collaboratively and accurately in a highly active setting
Preferred qualifications
Direct experience with Sunapsis and HR systems (ideally Peoplesoft)

$83,000 to $97,000
