How much do intern stipend jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for intern stipend in the United States is $17.04, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an intern stipend?

An intern stipend is a fixed amount of money paid to interns to help cover their living expenses during the course of their internship. Unlike a traditional hourly wage or salary, a stipend is typically provided as a lump sum or regular payment regardless of the number of hours worked. The amount and availability of stipends can vary widely depending on the company, industry, and location. While some internships offer stipends as compensation, others may be unpaid or offer academic credit instead. It's important for prospective interns to clarify stipend details before accepting a position.

What are some common challenges interns face when transitioning into a paid internship with a stipend?

Interns often encounter challenges such as adapting to a professional work environment and balancing multiple tasks within set deadlines. Learning to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors, understanding company expectations, and managing time efficiently are also common hurdles. Additionally, interns may need to quickly develop new technical or soft skills to contribute meaningfully and demonstrate their value during the internship period.

Is $23 an hour good for an internship?

For an internship, a $23 hourly stipend is generally considered above average in many industries, especially for entry-level or unpaid internships transitioning to paid roles. The adequacy depends on the location, industry standards, and the intern's skills, but this rate often reflects competitive compensation for internships requiring basic skills or training. Interns should also consider additional benefits, work environment, and opportunities for skill development when evaluating compensation.

What is a stipend for interns?

A stipend for interns is a fixed amount of money paid regularly to support their work experience during an internship. It is often provided in lieu of or in addition to other benefits and may vary based on the organization, location, and duration of the internship. Stipends help cover expenses and incentivize participation in the program.

Is $30 an hour good for an internship?

For an internship, a $30 hourly stipend is considered above average in many industries, especially for roles requiring specialized skills or in high-cost areas. However, the appropriateness depends on the location, industry standards, and the intern's experience level, as some internships offer stipends closer to minimum wage or less. Interns should also consider other benefits like mentorship, training, and future opportunities when evaluating compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern, you typically need a foundational knowledge in your field of study, strong organizational skills, and current enrollment in or recent graduation from an academic program. Familiarity with common office software like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and sometimes basic knowledge of industry-specific tools, is often expected. Proactive communication, eagerness to learn, and adaptability help interns stand out and make the most of the experience. These skills and qualities are crucial for building professional competency, gaining valuable on-the-job learning, and contributing meaningfully to the organization.

How much stipend do interns get?

Intern stipends vary depending on the industry, company, and location, but typically range from minimum wage to several thousand dollars per month. Some internships are unpaid, especially in non-profit or entry-level roles, while paid internships often offer between $300 and $2,000 monthly. Interns may also receive benefits such as training, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
