JOB SUMMARY
Orange Beach Fire & Rescue Department has full time Career Staff and Intern Firefighters that work assigned shifts and respond to emergencies. Intern Firefighters are part of emergency response in the Department for two primary purposes. First, to ensure rapid response of apparatus to the scene of an emergency, secondly, to provide a minimum guaranteed response of personnel. Interns are an integral part of the Department's response. The goal of the intern program is to recruit young adults, who are interested in becoming proficient emergency responders.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
EXPECTATIONS
- A 16 month contract must be fulfilled. Approximately 4 months of the 16 months shall be used to attain Firefighter I & II standards and EMT-B, while the remaining 12 months will be used for actual shift work.
- Exceptions to the 16 month requirement may be altered at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
- In accordance with state mandate Section 36-21-7, Code of Alabama 1975, fire protection personnel and firefighters that leave prior to their contract end for employment by another fire agency may be charged for the sum of the cost of their training and overtime paid to fill their role during training.
- This is an intern program. It is expected that the interns will spend nights at the fire station. Interns are responsible for fulfilling their contractual duty requirements at the applicable duty station.
- Intern, when assigned on duty, shall remain in their respective duty area unless assigned elsewhere by their Battalion Chief, or Company Officer.
- Interns, when assigned on duty, are required to respond to all calls involving their station.
- During an emergency situation, available interns may be placed on duty.
- "On Duty" interns will be prepared for emergency response at all times.
- Normal duty hours are from 08:00 to 08:00 hours.
- Interns will be assigned to one of three shifts. This will put them on duty every third day from 08:00 to 08:00. Interns will be provided with two "Kelly Days" (Off shifts) a month, to be assigned by the Battalion Chief or Company Officer.
- Mutual trades of Duty nights/days may be arranged between interns. Only personnel qualified to operate apparatus in the duty station will be acceptable to cover an intern's shift.
- Any replacement personnel must be IN the assigned station for the duration of the shift.
- Holiday shift coverage may be required on certain holidays. These assignments will be made in advance and will be distributed among all the interns regardless of shift assignments these assignments will be made for 24 hour shift coverage.
- Any intern who cannot work because of illness must notify their Company Officer and the on duty Battalion Chief. This may be done through Crew Sense and a phone call.
- A physician's slip must be submitted to the Intern Coordinator for any illness lasting more than two consecutive duty days (6 days).
- The Department may require a physician's slip for other types of illness/injury.
- The on duty Battalion Chief, the Fire Chief, and the Intern Coordinator must be immediately notified of all "on duty" injuries.
- The injured intern shall complete a Department accident report form and Workmen's Compensation "First Report of Injury".
- On Duty Interns are allowed visitors during their duty hours, however, visitors must no interfere with work.
- Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
- Maintains a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
- Provides responsible, appropriate, and satisfactory leadership within the City.
- Communicates positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.
- Attends all department meetings, City meetings, and professional development activities.
- Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies.
- Complies with City wide and departmental policies, as well as state and federal laws.
- Ensures the positive promotion of the City.
- Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

STATIONS AND FACILITIES
- Intern station assignments will be made by the Deputy Chief of Operations as deemed appropriate to meet the Department's needs. Changes may occur at any time.
- Fire Stations are used by a variety of people associated with the Department. Also, the stations are public buildings used by people from outside the Department. Because of the variety of uses, general cleanliness and courtesy are important to maintain an appropriate environment. Intern Firefighters are responsible for maintaining their individual areas as well as public areas in a clean and orderly condition. Cleaning supplies are provided at each station for this purpose.
- Individual sleeping rooms, if applicable, will be inspected periodically for neatness. Interns are responsible for physical damage to individual rooms of the station and will be billed for any repair costs.
- Common station areas, (kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc.) shall be left in a clean and orderly condition after each use.
- Suitcases, footlockers, bikes, and other personal items shall be stored in approved locations. Each station has minimal storage areas available. Theft or other illegal activities will not be tolerated.
- Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on department property will not be tolerated AND is grounds for immediate termination from the program
- The use of all fire stations, their facilities, and equipment is restricted to members of the Fire Department. Non-members are prohibited from storing their property or vehicles in or on Fire Department property.
- Intern vehicles may not be parked in the truck bays.
- Each intern will be responsible for providing his or her own linen and bedding.
- Pets of any kind are not allowed in the Fire Station.
All fire stations are to be locked when unattended.
UTILITIES
- Interns are expected to conserve the use of utilities.
- Lights in unoccupied rooms are to be turned off.
- Heating and air conditioning are to be used in a responsible manner
- Turn off all appliances when not in use.
- No personal toll calls will be made on Department telephones.
- Incoming personal calls are to be held to a minimum. Each intern is encouraged to obtain a cell phone, and furnish friends, family and the Fire Department with the number.
- Smoking/Tobacco- Smoking, chewing, use of e-cigarettes, pipes or other tobacco and nicotine products is not permitted at any time in City work areas or vehicles.
- Alcohol-Storage and consumption on Department property is prohibited at all times. No intern is allowed on premises if they are under the influence of any alcohol.
- Substance Abuse is prohibited at all times. The Department at any time may require a blood or urine test for the purpose of testing for substance abuse.
- Sexual, racial, and religious harassment-prohibited at all times.
All interns will follow all Department polices, regulations, standard operating guidelines, and all orders from Command, Officers, and Staff.
