Project management is primarily a non-technical skill that involves planning, organization, communication, and leadership. While technical knowledge can enhance a project manager's effectiveness, core skills like stakeholder management and scheduling are essential regardless of technical background.

What does a non-technical project manager do?

A non-technical project manager oversees projects that do not require technical expertise, focusing on planning, coordination, and communication among team members and stakeholders. They manage timelines, budgets, and resources, often using tools like MS Project or Trello, and ensure project goals are met efficiently.

Can an intern be a project manager?

Interns in non-technical project management roles typically do not serve as official project managers, as this position usually requires experience and certification. While interns can take on leadership tasks under supervision, full project management responsibilities are generally reserved for experienced professionals.

Can a non-technical person become a project manager?

Yes, a non-technical person can become a project manager, especially in roles that focus on planning, communication, and stakeholder management. • Drive the evolution of project intake, prioritization, and portfolio planning processes.
  • Partner with engineers and technical leads to evaluate feasibility, sequencing, and implementation approaches.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years' experience in technical project management, program management, or production technology roles in a technology-driven environment; experience in film, animation, VFX, games, or media technology, preferred.
  • Experience supporting software engineering, platform, infrastructure, or internal tools teams.
  • Experience using tools including Jira, Confluence, Lucidchart, and Keynote/PowerPoint.
  • Experience supporting internal developer platforms or pipeline tooling, preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex initiatives across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience working in and contributing to a PMO; PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM, PSM, or similar certification, preferred.
  • Proven ability to operate across Agile, Kanban, Lean, and Waterfall methodologies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical users.
  • Experience presenting program health, tradeoffs, and delivery forecasts to senior leadership or executive stakeholders.
