What is an intern manager?

Intern Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing internship programs within an organization. They coordinate the recruitment, onboarding, training, and daily supervision of interns, ensuring that both the interns and the company benefit from the experience. Intern Managers also serve as mentors and provide performance feedback, helping interns develop skills relevant to their field. Their role is crucial in creating a productive and educational environment for interns while meeting organizational goals.

How does an intern manager typically balance supervising interns with other managerial responsibilities?

An Intern Manager often juggles overseeing intern projects, mentoring, and providing feedback while also handling their own departmental duties. This requires strong organizational skills and the ability to delegate tasks effectively. Regular check-ins and clear communication help ensure interns are progressing, while time management techniques allow the manager to stay on top of both intern development and team goals. Collaborating with other managers and HR is also common to align intern activities with overall company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Manager, you need strong organizational skills, experience in team supervision, and a background in human resources or relevant field, often with a bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with onboarding systems, project management tools, and HR software is typically expected. Excellent interpersonal communication, mentorship ability, and conflict resolution are important soft skills for fostering intern development and engagement. These skills ensure effective program management, supportive learning environments, and successful integration of interns into the organization.

Job description

Business Administration Intern

About Overhead Solutions Group

Overhead Solutions Group is a Forbes-recognized CPA firm serving nonprofit organizations, grant-funded entities, and mission-driven businesses. We help our clients strengthen their accounting systems, prepare for audits, meet grant and compliance requirements, and produce financial information they can use.

We are a small firm, so the work here is not narrow. People own their projects, work directly with clients, and see how a whole engagement fits together.

We hire and promote against five values: Excellence, Accountability, Integrity, Preparedness, and Impact.

About the Role

Overhead Solutions Group is seeking a motivated Business Administration Intern to support our internal operations, human resources systems, task management processes, and day-to-day administrative needs. This is a great opportunity for a student majoring in Business Administration, Management, Human Resources, Operations, or a related field who wants hands-on experience learning how a growing professional services firm operates behind the scenes.

We are looking for someone who is organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and excited to learn. This role is ideal for someone who wants to grow with the organization and may be interested in a full-time opportunity after graduation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Human Resources & BambooHR Support
  • The intern will help maintain and manage our BambooHR system for a small team of fewer than 10 employees. This portion of the role is expected to be approximately 10–20% of the position.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with onboarding new team members
  • Helping ensure offboarding steps are completed properly
  • Making sure employees complete and sign required documents, including employee handbooks and company policies
  • Maintaining personnel records and HR-related information in BambooHR
  • Tracking time-off records, employee updates, and performance review schedules
  • Assisting with reminders and follow-up related to performance reviews and HR tasks
  • Canopy Task Management Support

The intern will help manage our workflow and task management system, Canopy, to ensure projects and assignments are organized and up to date.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Setting up tasks and projects in Canopy
  • Assigning tasks to the appropriate team members
  • Monitoring upcoming deadlines
  • Following up with team members on outstanding assignments
  • Helping ensure workflows are accurate, complete, and timely
  • Assisting with updates to recurring task lists and internal processes
  • Identifying areas where task management processes can be improved
  • Administrative & Operations Support

The intern will also help with general internal operations to keep the office running smoothly.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Monitoring office supplies and helping ensure items are restocked as needed
  • Keeping track of basic office needs such as printer paper, trash bags, coffee, creamer, and other supplies
  • Assisting with internal meetings, scheduling, and communications
  • Helping organize documents, files, and internal resources
  • Supporting special projects related to HR, operations, workflow, or administration
  • Assisting with general administrative tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Business Management, Human Resources, Operations Management, or a related field
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Dependable, proactive, and willing to learn
  • Comfortable communicating with team members and following up on tasks
  • Able to handle confidential information professionally
  • Comfortable using Google Workspace, including Google Docs, Sheets, Calendar, and Gmail
  • Willing to learn BambooHR, Canopy, and other internal systems
  • Interested in learning how a professional services firm operates

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience with HR, operations, and task management systems
  • Training on BambooHR and Canopy
  • Exposure to how a growing accounting and consulting firm manages internal operations
  • Experience supporting workflow, employee processes, and administrative systems
  • The opportunity to learn, grow, and potentially transition into a full-time role after graduation

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate enjoys organization, systems, follow-up, and helping a team stay on track. This person does not need prior experience, but they should be eager to learn, comfortable asking questions, and interested in building a long-term career in business administration, operations, or management.
