Job description

SUMMARY:

The Buffalo Intern will assist with the care of Prairie Island Indian Community's Bison Herd. Interns will help provide hay, feed, and mineral tubs to the herd as well as clean water drinkers daily. This position requires a strong work ethic and provides an opportunity to learn about the health and needs of our buffalo relatives.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

Monitor food and water supplies and ensure bison have access to hay, feed, mineral tubs, and clean water. Mix feed (if needed), fill feed troughs, and clean water drinkers daily.

Check and clear fence lines weekly. Make repairs to pens and fences as needed.

Clean, grease, and sharpen tools / equipment as needed.

Maintain the buffalo project grounds by mowing, weed-whipping, and brush clearing.

Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Assist with sorting bison as needed (for harvest, donations, etc.).

Understand and adhere to all safety and emergency response procedures.

Other duties assigned by the Buffalo Project Supervisor.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent

Good interpersonal and organizational skills

One (1) year experience working with and maintaining tools and equipment (mower, chainsaw, weed-whip, etc.)

Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision

Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure

Comfortable working with bison

Ability to respond quickly and calmly to an emergency

Sensitive to Native American Culture

Must pass drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check

Valid driver's license and proof of insurability


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledgeable and experienced in farming and feeding livestock

Experience working with heavy farm equipment.

Connection to Dakota culture and values.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*

Bend, lift/lower and carry 50+ pounds between shoulder height and ground
