What does an intern embedded systems do?

An Intern Embedded Systems assists in the design, development, and testing of embedded hardware and software systems that are part of larger electronic products. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers to write code, debug hardware, and perform troubleshooting. Interns may also help in developing prototypes, documenting technical processes, and running experiments to validate system performance. This role provides hands-on experience with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems, and various programming languages commonly used in embedded systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern embedded systems?

To thrive as an Intern Embedded Systems, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like C/C++, basic electronics, and microcontroller fundamentals, typically supported by coursework or a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with development tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and IDEs like Keil or MPLAB is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These qualifications enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, troubleshoot hardware-software issues, and adapt to the dynamic demands of embedded systems development.

What types of projects can an intern embedded systems expect to work on, and how are tasks typically assigned?

As an Intern Embedded Systems, you will often work on projects involving microcontroller programming, hardware testing, and developing or debugging firmware for embedded devices. Tasks are usually assigned based on your skill level and learning goals, with mentorship from senior engineers. Job description

Drone Systems Engineering Intern

Location: Lafayette, LA (Preferred)
Type: Internship (Part-Time or Full-Time)
     About DMR Technologies

DMR Technologies designs and manufactures advanced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) serving agriculture, public safety, critical infrastructure, and defense. Our products combine mechanical engineering, electronics, embedded systems, software, manufacturing, and autonomous flight into complete solutions built in Louisiana. We’re seeking a Drone Systems Engineering Intern who enjoys building things, solving problems, and learning across multiple engineering disciplines.
      What You'll Do

As a Drone Systems Engineering Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting the design, assembly, testing, and deployment of next-generation unmanned aircraft systems.
Projects may include:
  • Assisting with the design and development of drone platforms
  • Building and testing prototype aircraft
  • Supporting mechanical, electrical, and software integration
  • Assisting with flight testing and data collection
  • Troubleshooting hardware and system-level issues
  • Supporting manufacturing process improvements
  • Assisting with CAD models, engineering documentation, and BOM updates
  • Integrating sensors, payloads, cameras, communications equipment, and accessories
  • Supporting internal software tools, automation, or AI-powered engineering workflows
  • Working alongside engineering, production, and flight operations teams
No two weeks are the same. Interns are encouraged to contribute ideas, solve problems, and take ownership of meaningful projects.
   Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working with tools and hands-on equipment
  • Curious, self-motivated, and eager to learn
   Bonus Experience

Experience with any of the following is a plus:
  • CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
  • Electronics and soldering
  • Embedded systems or microcontrollers
  • JavaScript, Python, or C++
  • React or web application development
  • AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.)
  • Robotics or autonomous systems
  • 3D printing
  • Drone building or FPV experience
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
   What We're Looking For

We care less about checking every box and more about finding builders. The ideal candidate enjoys taking things apart, figuring out how they work, improving them, and building something even better.
   Why DMR?

You'll work directly with engineers, technicians, manufacturing, software developers, and company leadership while contributing to products that are deployed in the real world—not hypothetical classroom projects. You’ll leave with experience spanning engineering, manufacturing, software, testing, and product development that few internships can offer.
