What is the difference between Embedded System Design vs Firmware Development?

AspectEmbedded System DesignFirmware Development
CredentialsElectrical/Computer Engineering degrees, certifications in embedded systemsComputer Science or Electrical Engineering degrees, certifications in embedded programming
Work EnvironmentHardware and software integration, system architectureWriting, testing, and debugging low-level code
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial machinesEmbedded devices, IoT gadgets, medical devices

Embedded System Design involves creating the overall hardware and software architecture of embedded systems, focusing on system integration and hardware-software interaction. Firmware Development concentrates on writing and optimizing low-level code that runs directly on hardware. While both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap, Embedded System Design emphasizes system-level planning, whereas Firmware Development focuses on coding and firmware optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Designer, you need a solid background in electronics, computer engineering, and programming languages such as C/C++ or Assembly, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware description languages, and debugging tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make someone stand out in this position. These competencies ensure the successful development, optimization, and deployment of reliable embedded solutions in diverse industries.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded system designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Embedded system designers often work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each team may have different technical backgrounds and priorities. Balancing hardware constraints with software requirements and aligning on project timelines can require frequent coordination. Proactively sharing updates and establishing clear documentation practices can help mitigate these challenges and ensure smooth collaboration.

What is embedded system design?

Embedded system design refers to the process of creating specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger mechanical or electrical systems. These systems are typically built using microcontrollers or microprocessors and are optimized for specific tasks, such as controlling appliances, vehicles, or industrial machines. Embedded system design involves both hardware and software development, ensuring the system meets requirements for performance, reliability, and efficiency. This field is crucial in industries like automotive, healthcare, consumer electronics, and telecommunications, where devices need to operate autonomously and often in real-time.

Is embedded system design a good career?

Embedded system design is a promising career that involves developing specialized hardware and software for devices like IoT gadgets, medical equipment, and automotive systems. It requires skills in programming languages such as C and C++, knowledge of hardware architecture, and often involves working with real-time operating systems. The field offers opportunities for growth, innovation, and competitive salaries, especially for those with strong technical expertise and certifications.

Job description

Position Summary

Lion Energy is seeking an Embedded Systems Manager to lead our embedded engineering team in the development of next-generation energy storage and portable power solutions. This role owns the technical direction, team leadership, and delivery execution across embedded software, model-based controls, and embedded hardware disciplines. The Embedded Systems Manager balances hands-on technical oversight with people management, ensuring the team delivers reliable, scalable, and high-performance embedded systems while growing engineers' skills and career paths.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a cross-disciplinary team of Embedded Software Engineers, Model Based Controls Engineers, and Embedded Hardware Engineers
  • Set technical direction and architecture standards for embedded firmware, control systems, and hardware integration across product lines
  • Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for direct reports
  • Drive project planning, resource allocation, and prioritization across concurrent embedded systems programs
  • Partner with Product, Project Management, and Engineering leadership to align embedded deliverables with product roadmaps and launch timelines
  • Partner with Operations on PCB fabrication, assembly, and production readiness, ensuring hardware designs are optimized for manufacturability and quality
  • Manage relationships with third-party engineering resources, including contract engineers and OEM partners (e.g., China-based teams), to ensure quality, technical alignment, and schedule adherence
  • Guide firmware architecture, control algorithm design, and hardware integration decisions through design reviews and code reviews
  • Identify technical risks early and drive resolution of complex cross-functional firmware, controls, and hardware issues
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including coding standards, test strategies, documentation, and version control workflows
  • Report team progress, risks, and technical strategy to the CTO and other cross-functional leadership
  • Support recruiting efforts and represent the embedded systems team in cross-functional and executive discussions
  • Stay current on embedded systems trends, tools, and technologies relevant to power electronics and energy storage products

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Typically 6+ years of embedded software, controls, or hardware engineering experience, including 2+ years in a technical leadership or people management role
  • Strong technical background in embedded firmware development (C/C++), model-based control design (MATLAB/Simulink), or embedded hardware design
  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring engineering teams, including performance management and career development
  • Working knowledge of power electronics and energy storage systems, including:
    • DC-DC and DC-AC conversion
    • Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)
    • Battery charge management and protection
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects and balancing competing priorities across disciplines
  • Experience managing or coordinating with contract engineers or OEM/offshore partners is a plus
  • Strong communication skills, with experience presenting technical strategy to executive stakeholders
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet/TCP-IP) and embedded system integration principles
  • Experience with Agile or similar project management methodologies preferred
