Job description

Join the team that's shaping the future of autonomous robotics and material handling. As an R&D Principal Embedded Systems Firmware Engineer at Toyota Automated Logistics, you'll develop the brains behind the hardware controlling our intelligent robotic systems.
Toyota Automated Logistics R&D is the New Product Development (NPD) division of the company. Our mission is to develop original products that expand Toyota Automated Logistics' automation capabilities, enabling our commissioning and systems teams to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers a competitive edge.
Our ~70-person team is distributed between our Boise, Dallas, and Indianapolis offices, and includes experts in mechanical, electrical controls, embedded hardware, firmware, software, and AI disciplines, all with a strong foundation in robotics technology. Beyond our Toyota Automated Logistics offices, we collaborate heavily with our Toyota family partners to innovate and share our technology globally.

Job Functions:
  • Collaborate with Electrical Controls, Embedded Hardware, Mechanical and Software Engineering teams to come up with innovating new ideas and new technologies
  • Spearhead firmware and embedded roadmap to support current and future products
  • Design firmware architectures for successful embedded systems projects with regards to system functionality, customer satisfaction, schedule, time, and budget
  • Develop firmware for RTOS applications
  • Troubleshoot bugs using a real-time debugger/ICE and firmware logs
  • Define embedded systems processes, standards, and best practices
  • Mentor junior engineers in firmware development
  • Document functional specifications to support embedded systems projects
  • Coordinate with Project Managers to accurately represent project schedules
  • Remain up to date on all industry trends and new research in order help train and develop team members
  • Foster a cross-collaborative environment with other divisions within Bastian
  • Introduce and present new technology concepts to the team
  • Track projects and report progress and issues to the Engineering Manager
  • Assist in resolving engineering issues as they arise by working closely with the engineering team, vendors, and technician
  • Ensure we meet and exceed our customers' expectations through superior design and implementation
  • Complete all administrative tasks/paperwork in timely manner
  • Work with management to prioritize projects on a macro level; prioritize individual tasks on your own
  • Work with management to develop process standards within the department
  • Attend training and become certified in applicable controls technologies or programs

Travel Requirements:
  • 10% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Toyota Automated Logistics)

Required Qualifications and Preferred Skills:
  • 15+ years' experience in a firmware engineer or embedded systems engineer position
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or related field
  • Proficient in C, Python, and other common development languages
  • Proficiency using Linux as a development environment
  • Microcontroller firmware experience
  • Experience working with a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)
  • Serial digital communication knowledge (UART, I2C, CAN, SPI, USB)
  • Understanding of how to solve problems through hardware or firmware and pros/cons of each approach
  • Experience using hardware troubleshooting tools (multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer)
  • Experience designing, reviewing, testing PCBs
  • Experience driving agile process for project pacing and delegating to other contributors
  • Strong background in influencing-type role with presentation skills
  • Driving the team to learn and research new projects and technology
  • Background in a collaborative role with multiple disciplines
  • Ability to write thorough documentation for new software and processes
  • Ability to mentor and guide people to meet their goals
  • Aptitude for hands-on electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
