We serve the residents of Hamilton County in more ways than you may realize! As the Building Inspector at Hamilton County, you will be responsible for performing independent field inspections of residential and limited commercial construction projects to ensure compliance with the Ohio Building Code (OBC), Residential Code of Ohio (RCO), and Hamilton County ordinances. This role requires sound technical judgment, strong customer service skills, and thorough knowledge of building systems and inspection procedures. You will plan and perform daily inspections, communicate code requirements to contractors and property owners, and document all findings in the County’s inspection management system (i.e. Accela, exTrak, and Edge).
Summary of Job Duties:
  • Conduct inspections of residential and limited commercial construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, building codes, and County/state standards by identifying violations, issuing corrective actions, verifying repairs, and providing guidance to contractors, design professionals, and property owners
  • Document inspection results and maintain permit records in County systems by recording inspection outcomes, comments, and photographs, ensuring accurate and timely data entry, assisting with reports, and using GIS tools to verify parcel and site information.
  • Communicate inspection requirements, code interpretations, and corrective actions to contractors, homeowners, and the public by providing clear guidance, addressing questions and concerns, coordinating re-inspections, and ensuring compliance with County standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residency.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of the County’s Building Inspector Trainee program, or At least five (5) years of skilled trades or construction experience (residential or commercial) qualifying the candidate for OBBS Level 2 RLC.
  • Certification Requirements: Required within thirty-six (36) months of hire: OBBS Level 2 Residential Limited Commercial (RLC) Building Inspector Certification.

  • 40 Hour Work Week, generally between core hours of 7:30-5:30
