They typically have a few years of experience and can work independently on moderately complex tasks, while also collaborating with senior engineers and other team members. Their work might involve writing code, reviewing pull requests, debugging, and participating in code reviews. Intermediate Software Engineers help ensure that software meets quality standards and project requirements while also learning new technologies and best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate software engineer?

To thrive as an Intermediate Software Engineer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or JavaScript), solid problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Experience with version control systems (like Git), familiarity with development frameworks, and sometimes certifications in cloud technologies or agile methodologies are valuable. Strong collaboration, communication, and adaptability help you contribute effectively to team projects and navigate shifting priorities. Senior RPA Engineer

Job description

We are hiring for this position out of our Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary offices. Successful candidates who apply outside of these areas will be expected to relocate and reside in a location that is within a commutable distance.

About the team:

The Robotic Process Automation team operates as a transversal Center of Excellence (CoE) serving the entire bank, reporting directly to the VP of Data Engineering. Our core mandate is to drive enterprise-wide efficiency, mitigate regulatory risk, and unlock critical data from complex or legacy systems where traditional integration methods are not possible.

Currently operating as a lean group, the team is on the cusp of a major transformation. We are evolving from a reactive, service-oriented model into a highly structured, strategic engineering practice. We work within an Agile framework that is tightly integrated with the bank's broader enterprise architecture and intake processes. When new initiatives require automation, dedicated Project Managers handle the requirements and backlog population, allowing our engineers to focus strictly on technical design, robust execution, and system performance.

About you

You are a senior software engineer who happens to specialize in automation, not a developer who just builds bots. You thrive in environments that require both technical mastery and strategic vision. Where others see legacy systems or broken processes, you see a mandate for transformation. You are comfortable stepping into a team that is early in its maturity journey and taking the reins to build a robust, scalable engineering foundation.

You don't just execute requirements; you challenge them, seeking API-first solutions and designing for resilience, SLAs, and long-term maintainability. You believe that RPA and low-code platforms require the exact same SDLC rigor, CI/CD discipline, and observability as any traditional software product. You are highly autonomous, driven by the challenge of reducing technical debt, and eager to mentor others while setting the technical standard for an expanding enterprise practice.

About you / qualifications:

  • More than 7 years of experience working in software engineering.
  • Experience working on cloud-native architecture is a must.
  • Experience improving Software Development Life Cycle and mentoring team members.
  • Experience working in the banking industry or fintech an asset.
  • Proven experience in building complex systems with a focus on scalability, performance, reliability, and resiliency.
  • More than 4 years of experience designing and delivering Robotic Process Automation
  • Deep experience working with platforms such as UiPath or Microsoft Power Automate
  • Experience promoting bots across environments and observing quality assurance processes.
  • Experience with embedding observability and support practices into the development cycle.
  • Experience working in Agile development teams:
  • Active participation in design, development, code reviews, and delivery.
  • Experience in creating and refining requirements, non-functional requirements, acceptance criteria, and definition-of-done.
  • Experience collaborating across cross-functional teams:
  • Proven ability to work with Product Owners, Quality Assurance, DevOps, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience in the operation and support of business-critical production systems
  • Incident management
  • Root cause analysis
  • Observability & Monitoring
  • Additional qualifications:
  • Experience with modern development tools and practices, such as CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and git-ops processes.

Technical experience with:

  • RPA
    • UiPath
    • Microsoft Power Automate an asset
      • Cloud
        • Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure
        • Microsoft Fabric an asset
          • Software development
            • C# and Python are assets
            • Databases
              • Relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.)
              • Security
                • OAuth2, OIDC, JWT both from a client and server perspective.

                About the day-to-day:

                • Architect and build resilient automations:
                  • Design, develop, and deploy complex RPA solutions using UiPath and Power Automate.
                  • Prioritize API-first integrations and robust exception handling over fragile UI scraping.
                  • Author comprehensive Solution Design Documents (SDDs) incorporating SLAs and operational metrics
                • Drive technical governance and code quality:
                  • Design clean, maintainable, and efficient automations per the business requirements.
                  • Lead code reviews to ensure quality, security, and adherence to enterprise standards.
                  • Establish and maintain reusable component libraries to accelerate future development.
                  • Provide constructive feedback and mentor intermediate/junior developers in RPA best practices
                • Transform our engineering practices (SDLC & DevOps):
                  • Design and implement proper release management and CI/CD promotion workflows for RPA artifacts.
                  • Integrate RPA platform telemetry with enterprise observability tools (e.g., DataDog) for proactive incident management.
                  • Help transition the team from manual deployments to automated, Git-ops-driven processes.
                    • Collaborate across cross-functional teams:
                      • Work closely with Project Managers, Product Owners, and the core DevOps team to align automation architecture with broader enterprise infrastructure.
                      • Help refine user stories, clarify technical constraints, and establish clear Definitions of Done (DoD).
                      • Participate in Agile ceremonies, providing technical leadership during sprint planning and retrospectives.
                          • Learn and grow:
                            • Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies.
                            • Participate in training sessions, workshops, and conferences.
                          • Ensure operational excellence and security:
                            • Troubleshoot complex issues in production and perform deep root cause analysis on failed automations.
                            • Collaborate with the team to find solutions to complex problems.
                            • Monitor application performance and optimize code for efficiency.
                            • Ensure all data extraction and integration adheres strictly to OAuth2/OIDC standards and banking compliance requirements.
