What is an intermediate accountant?

Intermediate accountants are accounting professionals who typically have a few years of experience and a solid understanding of accounting principles. They are responsible for tasks such as preparing financial statements, reconciling accounts, assisting with audits, and supporting senior accountants or managers. Intermediate accountants act as a bridge between entry-level staff and more senior accounting roles, often taking on more complex assignments and greater responsibility within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate accountant?

To thrive as an Intermediate Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and reconciliations, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and progress toward a professional designation like CPA. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, is usually required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with teams and ensuring accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining financial integrity, supporting business decision-making, and meeting compliance standards.

What are some common challenges intermediate accountants face when transitioning from entry-level roles?

Intermediate Accountants often encounter challenges such as managing more complex reconciliations, handling a larger portfolio of accounts, and taking on more responsibility for month-end closing processes. They may also be expected to provide guidance to junior staff and communicate findings to management, which can require strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Adapting to a faster-paced environment and learning new accounting systems or software are also typical hurdles during this career stage.

Job description

About the Role:

Our client, a growing contract manufacturer in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry, partners with some of the worldโ€™s most recognizable brands โ€” including major retailers and consumer companies such as Walmart and Procter & Gamble โ€” to produce high-quality products across multiple categories. As the business continues to expand, they are seeking an Intermediate Accountant / Staff Accountant to support day-to-day accounting operations in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional early in their career who is looking to build strong operational accounting experience within the CPG and manufacturing space while growing into increased responsibility over time. The successful candidate will work closely with leadership to support financial processes, reconciliations, reporting, and general accounting functions in a collaborative and fast-paced setting.

The environment is practical and entrepreneurial, requiring someone who is organized, detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a less structured, more manual operation.

Responsibilities:

  • Support daily accounting and bookkeeping activities across the business
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and reconcile bank accounts, cash reconciliations, and general ledger accounts
  • Process and support Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activities
  • Record journal entries, accruals, and other accounting transactions
  • Compile and maintain balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Assist with financial reporting, variance analysis, and budget-to-actual tracking
  • Generate and analyze reports through the ERP system to support operational and cost visibility
  • Support external audit preparation and provide required documentation
  • Assist with sales reporting, quarterly reporting, and year-end reporting requirements
  • Monitor data accuracy and identify discrepancies for follow-up
  • Support ongoing process improvements within the accounting function
  • Work closely with leadership to gradually take ownership of additional accounting responsibilities over time

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • 1โ€“2 years of accounting experience preferred, ideally within a manufacturing or product-based environment
  • Strong understanding of accounting fundamentals, including debits/credits and reconciliations
  • Experience with bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger accounting
  • Exposure to Accounts Payable and/or Accounts Receivable functions
  • Strong Excel skills, including working with formulas, spreadsheets, and data organization
  • Manufacturing experience is considered an asset but is not required
  • Experience working in a small-to-mid-sized company or less structured environment is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage competing deadlines
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn

Key Traits for Success:

  • Calm, practical, and team-oriented approach
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to roll up your sleeves
  • Highly organized and detail-focused
  • Adaptable and comfortable in a hands-on environment
  • Eager to learn, develop, and grow within the organization
  • Able to take initiative and gradually assume greater responsibility over time
