The main difference between an Interim Substitute and a Classroom Teacher is the duration and nature of employment. Interim Substitutes fill short-term gaps, often with temporary credentials, while Classroom Teachers hold permanent positions with full certification. Both roles are essential in the education industry, but they serve different staffing needs and career paths.

How does an Interim Substitute prepare for stepping into diverse classrooms on short notice?

As an Interim Substitute, you often receive assignments with little advance notice, so adaptability and quick learning are key. Preparation typically involves reviewing lesson plans left by the regular teacher, familiarizing yourself with school policies, and establishing clear classroom expectations early in the day. You'll need to be ready to manage different age groups and subject areas, often building rapport with students and collaborating with other staff for support. This role helps you develop strong classroom management and communication skills, which can open doors to more permanent teaching opportunities.

What are interim substitutes?

Interim substitutes are educators who temporarily fill in for regular teachers or staff members who are absent for an extended period, such as due to illness, parental leave, or other long-term absences. Unlike day-to-day substitutes, interim substitutes often remain in the same classroom for several weeks or months, ensuring continuity of instruction and classroom management. They are responsible for following lesson plans, maintaining classroom routines, and supporting students' learning during the regular teacher's absence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interim Substitute, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interim Substitute, you need a basic understanding of classroom management, lesson delivery, and a minimum of a high school diploma or relevant educational background. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, attendance systems, and district-specific communication tools is often required. Flexibility, patience, and strong interpersonal skills help substitutes adapt to new environments and engage effectively with diverse groups of students. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining continuity of instruction and ensuring a positive classroom experience during teacher absences.

How much do subs get paid?

In Georgia, substitute teachers typically earn between $100 and $150 per day, depending on the school district and level of education. Pay rates may vary based on experience, certification, and whether the position is part-time or full-time, with some districts offering higher rates for long-term assignments or specialized subjects.
