How much do intelligent transportation system jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for intelligent transportation system in the United States is $80,201.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48,500.00 and $101,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)?

An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) refers to the integration of advanced technologies such as sensors, communication networks, and data analytics into transportation infrastructure and vehicles. These systems are designed to improve traffic management, enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and provide real-time information to drivers and transit users. ITS applications can include traffic signal control, electronic toll collection, incident detection, and traveler information systems, all aimed at making transportation more efficient and sustainable.

Is transport management a good career?

Transport management is a viable career that involves coordinating logistics, optimizing transportation operations, and ensuring timely delivery of goods and passengers. It requires skills in planning, communication, and often familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS) and regulations. The field offers opportunities in various industries such as logistics, public transit, and freight, with potential for career growth and stability.

What jobs fall under transportation?

Jobs under transportation include roles such as transportation planners, traffic engineers, logistics coordinators, and transportation system operators. These positions often require knowledge of traffic management, data analysis, and relevant certifications or licenses, and they focus on ensuring efficient movement of people and goods across various modes like road, rail, air, and maritime systems.

What is the difference between Intelligent Transportation System vs Traffic Engineer?

AspectIntelligent Transportation SystemTraffic Engineer
Required credentialsDegree in transportation, civil engineering, or related field; certifications in ITS technologiesDegree in civil engineering or transportation engineering; licensure often preferred
Work environmentDesign, develop, and implement transportation technologies; often in labs or planning officesPlan, analyze, and manage traffic flow; fieldwork and site assessments
Employer and industry usageTransportation agencies, technology firms, urban planning departmentsMunicipalities, transportation departments, consulting firms

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) focuses on integrating advanced technologies to improve transportation efficiency, safety, and management. Traffic Engineers design and analyze traffic systems to optimize flow and safety. While both roles work within the transportation industry, ITS professionals develop innovative tech solutions, whereas Traffic Engineers focus on planning and operational analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or electrical engineering, computer science, and traffic management, often supported by a relevant degree and professional engineering licensure. Familiarity with traffic modeling software, SCADA systems, and ITS-specific certifications such as ITS Professional Capacity Building (ITS PCB) are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure the effective design, implementation, and maintenance of smart transportation solutions that optimize safety, efficiency, and mobility.

What does an intelligent transportation system do?

An intelligent transportation system (ITS) involves the use of technology such as sensors, communication networks, and data analysis to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and reduce congestion. ITS professionals design, implement, and maintain these systems to optimize transportation infrastructure and support real-time decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) roles?

Professionals in Intelligent Transportation Systems often face challenges such as integrating new technologies with existing infrastructure, managing large-scale data from various sensors and sources, and ensuring interoperability between different transportation and communication systems. Additionally, they may need to address cybersecurity concerns and work closely with government agencies, engineers, and IT teams to ensure reliable system performance. Staying updated with evolving standards and regulatory requirements is also key to success in this dynamic field.

What jobs can you get with BSIT?

A Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) can lead to roles such as Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technician, systems analyst, network administrator, or transportation software developer. These jobs often require knowledge of networking, programming, and transportation management systems, and may involve working with traffic control systems, data analysis, or infrastructure technology.
