What is an intelligent transportation system?

An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) refers to the integration of advanced technologies such as sensors, communication networks, and data analytics into transportation infrastructure and vehicles. These systems are designed to improve traffic management, enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and provide real-time information to drivers and transit users. ITS applications can include traffic signal control, electronic toll collection, incident detection, and traveler information systems, all aimed at making transportation more efficient and sustainable.

What is the difference between Intelligent Transportation System vs Traffic Engineer?

AspectIntelligent Transportation SystemTraffic Engineer
Required credentialsDegree in transportation, civil engineering, or related field; certifications in ITS technologiesDegree in civil engineering or transportation engineering; licensure often preferred
Work environmentDesign, develop, and implement transportation technologies; often in labs or planning officesPlan, analyze, and manage traffic flow; fieldwork and site assessments
Employer and industry usageTransportation agencies, technology firms, urban planning departmentsMunicipalities, transportation departments, consulting firms

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) focuses on integrating advanced technologies to improve transportation efficiency, safety, and management. Traffic Engineers design and analyze traffic systems to optimize flow and safety. While both roles work within the transportation industry, ITS professionals develop innovative tech solutions, whereas Traffic Engineers focus on planning and operational analysis.

What is the best job in transportation?

In the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems, roles such as ITS engineer, systems analyst, or transportation planner are highly valued. These jobs typically require knowledge of traffic management, data analysis, and experience with transportation technologies, often supported by relevant certifications and a background in engineering or computer science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intelligent transportation system engineer?

To thrive as an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or electrical engineering, computer science, and traffic management, often supported by a relevant degree and professional engineering licensure. Familiarity with traffic modeling software, SCADA systems, and ITS-specific certifications such as ITS Professional Capacity Building (ITS PCB) are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills and qualifications ensure the effective design, implementation, and maintenance of smart transportation solutions that optimize safety, efficiency, and mobility.

What does an intelligent transportation system do?

An intelligent transportation system (ITS) involves the use of technology such as sensors, communication networks, and data analysis to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and reduce congestion. ITS professionals design, implement, and maintain these systems to optimize transportation infrastructure and support smart mobility solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in intelligent transportation system roles?

Professionals in Intelligent Transportation Systems often face challenges such as integrating new technologies with existing infrastructure, managing large-scale data from various sensors and sources, and ensuring interoperability between different transportation and communication systems. Additionally, they may need to address cybersecurity concerns and work closely with government agencies, engineers, and IT teams to ensure reliable system performance. Staying updated with evolving standards and regulatory requirements is also key to success in this dynamic field.

Job description

ABOUT FALCON ELECTRIC

Falcon keeps the systems modern life depends on running where ordinary power gives out: the remote pump station, the roadside traffic cabinet, the treatment plant that can never go dark. For 35 years, when conditions are too hot, too cold, too dirty, or too far from anywhere for standard equipment to survive, engineers have specified Falcon. We build true online power protection engineered for the field, and we stand behind it without dispute.

We have something rare: a 35-year engineering reputation, the trust of the engineers who stake their projects on us, and a mission worth winning. We chose the hardest corner of the power world on purpose, and we intend to own it completely, bringing the hunger of a startup to a company that earned its credibility the hard way. Part of that bet is how we work: our vision is to be AI-native, using AI and building our own into how we operate so a focused team can move with the speed and reach of one many times its size, with AI doing the heavy lifting and people making the calls that matter. We are early. The engine is being built now, not bought off a shelf, and you will help build it.

This is a chance to build something that matters, protecting the water, transportation, and power infrastructure the world runs on, with people who move fast, own their outcomes, and are a little obsessed with winning. If that is your kind of work, come build it with us.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW

Falcon wins by being designed in specified into a water treatment plant's SCADA standard, a DOT's traffic-cabinet spec, or an OEM's UL 508A control panel not by transactional price competition. That is deep, relationship-led, long-cycle selling to specifying engineers, integrators, and infrastructure owners, and it requires someone who already speaks the language of the vertical.

We are hiring one vertical leader to go deep in a single priority industry (Traffic & Intelligent Transportation Systems) and drive genuine penetration: named-account development, design wins, and the vertical solution kits that turn one win into a repeatable motion. You bring the domain expertise and the relationships; Falcon brings a differentiated product and an AI workforce that makes you dangerous at scale.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

  • Your vertical's go-to-market. Own the account universe, the specifying engineers, and the design-win pipeline for your chosen industry - Traffic & Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Spec-in positions. Get Falcon designed into projects, plant standards, cabinet specs, and control-panel BOMs the positions that generate durable, defensible revenue.
  • Named-account development & close. Develop and win named accounts in the vertical through long-cycle, technically credible selling.
  • Vertical solution kits. Partner with engineering and marketing to define packaged solutions for your vertical that make Falcon the easy default.
  • Voice of the customer. Feed vertical requirements, competitive intelligence, and lost-deal insight back to product and engineering.
  • The vertical scoreboard. Own spec-in positions and qualified design-win pipeline in your vertical, the metrics that predict revenue in a designed-in market.

FIRST 6 & 12 MONTHS

  • By day 90: A complete AI-built account and specifier map for your vertical, an active signal feed of live projects, and first spec-in conversations underway.
  • By month 6: A qualified design-win pipeline in the vertical, first spec-in positions secured, and a defined solution kit in development.
  • By month 12: Multiple design wins converting to revenue, Falcon established as a specified option in your industry, and a repeatable vertical playbook others can follow.

WHAT YOU BRING - MUST-HAVE

  • 7+ years selling technically engineered products into transportation / traffic / ITS / rail.
  • Deep, current relationships with specifying engineers, integrators, EPCs, or municipal/DOT buyers in that vertical.
  • A demonstrated track record of design wins, spec-in, or long-cycle industrial infrastructure sales.
  • Enough technical fluency to hold a credible power-protection / critical-infrastructure conversation with an engineer.
  • Comfort operating with AI account-intelligence and signal tooling as a daily force multiplier.

PREFERRED

  • Existing contacts in the chosen vertical you can activate on day one.
  • Familiarity with the vertical's control ecosystem, SCADA/RTU, PLC/HMI, or ITS controllers.
  • Understanding of how UPS and backup power fit critical-infrastructure design.

HOW YOU'LL BE MEASURED

Falcon measures this role on spec-in positions and qualified design-win pipeline in your vertical - the leading indicators of durable revenue in a designed-in market - not on raw MQL or meeting counts. You will run a weekly operating rhythm against a small, clear scorecard.
