What is an integration job?

Integration jobs involve connecting different software systems, applications, or data sources so they can work together seamlessly. Professionals in this field design, develop, and maintain solutions that enable data and processes to flow smoothly between various platforms. This often includes using middleware, APIs, and integration tools to ensure systems communicate effectively. Integration jobs are common in organizations that use multiple software programs or migrate data between systems.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an integration specialist?

To thrive as an Integration Specialist, you need a solid understanding of systems integration, software development, and data management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft or Dell Boomi), APIs, and certifications in relevant technologies are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate across teams and resolve technical challenges. These abilities are crucial to ensure seamless data flow and interoperability between diverse business systems, which supports organizational efficiency and innovation.

What are common challenges faced by integration specialists, and how can they be addressed?

Integration specialists often encounter challenges such as managing data consistency across multiple systems, handling compatibility issues between different software platforms, and ensuring minimal downtime during the integration process. Addressing these challenges typically involves thorough planning, clear communication with stakeholders, and rigorous testing in staging environments before deployment. Staying current with integration tools and best practices, as well as collaborating closely with development, QA, and IT teams, can significantly help in overcoming these obstacles.

But the truly inspiring firms - the game-changers, the industry leaders and the disruptors - have cultures that propel them to innovate and stand out. At Brown Advisory, we aim to be one of those inspired firms. Over the years, we have purposefully built and nurtured our client-first culture.

Brown Advisory is an independent investment management and strategic advisory firm committed to delivering a combination of first-class performance, strategic advice and the highest level of client service. Position Summary:
The Technical Architect, Integration Development is a senior hands-on architecture and engineering leader responsible for designing, governing, and delivering integration solutions within Brown Advisory enterprise platforms. This role will provide architecture leadership for integrations involving Canoe, Snowflake, Addepar, portfolio and client reporting platforms and related enterprise services. The position requires strong experience in highly regulated financial services environments, practical knowledge of asset management operating models, and the ability to design secure, resilient, observable, and maintainable platforms that support business transformation, automation, analytics, and operational efficiency.

The primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead solution architecture for API, microservice, middleware, event-driven, and data integration models across enterprise systems.
  • Design and govern integration patterns for Canoe, Snowflake, Addepar, portfolio management platforms, client advisory tools, reporting platforms, accounting and finance systems, and external vendor ecosystems.
  • Drive design, planning, execution, and delivery of enhancements for portfolio management, client platforms, financial operations, advisory tools, and enterprise data workflows.
  • Partner with product owners, business stakeholders, engineers, data teams, security, infrastructure, and vendors to translate business strategy into practical technology delivery roadmaps.
  • Establish technical standards for API design, service decomposition, data contracts, authentication, authorization, monitoring, logging, resiliency, and lifecycle management.
  • Lead an engineering workstream through system design, enhancements, integration delivery, testing, release planning, and production support transition.
  • Support and enhance enterprise systems in a highly regulated financial environment, including controls for data quality, privacy, security, auditability, and operational resilience.
  • Provide technical leadership for integrations that automate alternative investment document collection, data extraction, data normalization, downstream reporting, and operational workflows.
  • Advance Snowflake-centered data integration patterns, including secure data ingestion, transformation, sharing, consumption, governance, and integration with analytics and reporting platforms.
  • Manage architecture governance, technical risk assessments, vendor design reviews, proof-of-concept evaluations, implementation sequencing, and change-management activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable financial, operational, data, security, and regulatory standards, including SOX, AML/KYC, SEC/FINRA expectations where relevant to platform scope.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of enterprise systems, application development, solution architecture, or integration architecture experience supporting financial systems and wealth or asset management platforms.
  • 5+ years of experience in wealth management, asset management, investment operations, portfolio management, or adjacent financial services environments.
  • 5+ years of technical leadership experience leading architects, engineers, analysts, delivery teams, or cross-functional technical workstreams.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering API integrations, microservices, middleware solutions, data services, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Experience translating business strategy, operating model needs, and regulatory requirements into technology roadmaps, target architectures, and delivery plans.
  • Experience supporting enterprise platforms in a production environment, including release planning, regression testing, incident response, operational support, and vendor coordination.
  • Working knowledge of asset management workflows, including portfolio data, client reporting, trading or investment operations, performance analytics, alternative investments, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with data platforms, data warehouses, SQL, data modeling concepts, data quality controls, and system-to-system data flows.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, organizational, stakeholder management, and team development skills.
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities, competing deadlines, and high expectations for quality and reliability.
  • Ability to work in Brown Advisory's Baltimore office three days per week.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with Canoe or comparable alternative investment document automation, data extraction, and data management platforms.
