How much do integration test engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for integration test engineer in the United States is $124,275.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $104,000.00 and $140,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Integration Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Integration Test Engineer, you need a strong background in software development, test methodologies, and system integration, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation tools (such as Selenium or Jenkins), scripting languages, and continuous integration systems is typically required. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication help you identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring seamless integration of software components, reducing defects, and delivering reliable systems.

What are Integration Test Engineers?

Integration Test Engineers are professionals who specialize in verifying that different software modules or components work together correctly as a complete system. They design, implement, and execute test procedures to identify issues that may arise when integrating various parts of an application or system. Their role is crucial in ensuring the quality and reliability of software products before they are released to users. Integration Test Engineers often collaborate with developers and system architects to define test plans and resolve any integration issues found during testing.

What is the difference between Integration Test Engineer vs Software Test Engineer?

AspectIntegration Test EngineerSoftware Test Engineer
Primary FocusTesting how different software modules work togetherTesting individual software components or features
Required SkillsKnowledge of integration processes, scripting, debuggingUnderstanding of testing methodologies, test case design
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with development teams during integration phasesWorks across various stages of software development, often independently
CertificationsISTQB, ISTQB Advanced Level, or similarISTQB, Certified Software Tester, or similar

While both roles focus on testing, Integration Test Engineers specialize in verifying the interaction between modules, whereas Software Test Engineers focus on testing individual components. Understanding these differences helps employers and candidates align skills with job requirements effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by Integration Test Engineers when working with cross-functional teams?

Integration Test Engineers often work closely with development, QA, and operations teams to ensure that various software modules function seamlessly together. A common challenge is managing communication and expectations between teams, especially when modules are developed by different groups or vendors. Integration issues may arise due to inconsistencies in data formats, interfaces, or timing, requiring proactive problem-solving and clear documentation. Successful engineers excel at collaborating, coordinating test schedules, and providing detailed feedback to stakeholders, which helps streamline the integration process and resolve issues efficiently.

Job description

SOFTWARE INTEGRATION & TEST ENGINEER

Mesh Optical Technologies was founded on the belief that optical photons will be at the center of advanced technologies in the coming century. Making advanced technology ubiquitous means building at scale, and that's exactly what we're doing at Mesh.

We are seeking a Software Integration & Test Engineer to own the software that automates, controls, and monitors our production lines and test infrastructure. You will build the systems that drive production equipment, orchestrate test execution, and ensure every process step is observable, traceable, and reliable at volume.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the software that automates production lines and controls hardware interfaces between factory tools, stations, instruments, and workflows
  • Own the software that automates end-of-line production test systems and development lab test environments, ensuring deterministic execution and reliable results at throughput
  • Develop and maintain test automation frameworks used for qualification, validation, and manufacturing, including instrument control, sequencing, and pass/fail determination
  • Build and maintain data acquisition pipelines for test results, process logs, and system metrics, ensuring production data is captured, stored, and accessible for analysis
  • Implement health monitoring, fault detection, and alerting across manufacturing and test software systems
  • Support root-cause analysis for line interruptions, process excursions, test escapes, and automation failures
  • Work closely with process and manufacturing engineering to ensure every process parameter is fully observable, controllable, and traceable across the line
  • Support CI-driven test and integration environments that validate hardware, firmware, and software changes prior to production deployment
  • Extend automation and control systems to support new product introductions, process changes, and production ramps
  • Interface with mechanical, electrical, optical, and manufacturing engineering teams to resolve integration issues that span hardware and software boundaries

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline
  • 1+ years of hands-on software development experience (internships, co-ops, and substantive project experience qualify)
  • Strong proficiency in Python, with experience writing production-quality code
  • Experience developing and operating software in Linux environments
  • Familiarity with CI systems, automated testing pipelines, and deployment workflows
  • Demonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguity
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience interfacing software with manufacturing equipment, instrumentation, or controls systems (e.g., instrument control via GPIB, USB, serial, or Ethernet)
  • Strong proficiency in C or C++ in addition to Python
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, serial protocols, device communication)
  • Experience with data acquisition, time-series data, or production database systems
  • Experience designing software systems for observability, fault tolerance, and long-term maintainability
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, test automation frameworks, or automated validation systems
  • Background in hardware-centric or high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Experience with containerization, infrastructure-as-code, or deployment automation
  • Familiarity with MES systems, production traceability, or factory data infrastructure
  • Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative software development workflows

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Software Integration & Test Engineer: $115,000.00 - $140,000.00/per year

Title and base salary are determined on a case by case basis commensurate with experience and merit.
