What is an integration engineer?

Integration Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in connecting different software systems, applications, or technologies to ensure they work together seamlessly. Their responsibilities often include designing integration solutions, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining data flow between systems. They collaborate with development, operations, and business teams to implement and optimize integrations, ensuring that the organization's technology ecosystem runs efficiently. Integration Engineers often work with APIs, middleware, and various programming languages to achieve these goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an integration engineer?

To thrive as an Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, experience with system integration, and proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C#. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Apache Camel), APIs, and relevant certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure seamless connection of systems, effective troubleshooting, and smooth collaboration with cross-functional teams.

What are some common challenges integration engineers face when connecting disparate systems, and how are they typically addressed?

Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as data format incompatibility, varying communication protocols, and legacy system limitations when connecting different software or hardware systems. To address these, they use middleware solutions, develop custom adapters, and leverage standardized APIs or integration platforms to ensure seamless data flow. Regular collaboration with software developers, IT staff, and business stakeholders is essential to understand system requirements and troubleshoot integration issues efficiently.

What is the difference between Integration Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectIntegration EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications like Cisco, AWS may helpBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; coding certifications optional
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with IT, network teams, and clients to implement integrationsWorks primarily on coding, designing, and testing software applications
Industry UsageCommon in tech, healthcare, finance for system integrationsWidespread across all software development sectors
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for technical skills and project scopeCompared for coding skills and software design expertise

The main difference is that Integration Engineers focus on connecting and configuring systems and software to work together seamlessly, often involving network and hardware components. Software Developers primarily design, code, and test software applications. Both roles require technical skills, but Integration Engineers emphasize system integration and interoperability, while Software Developers focus on creating software solutions.

How much do integration engineers make?

Integration engineers in general earn a median salary of around $80,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and the industry. In metropolitan areas, salaries tend to be higher due to cost of living and demand for technical skills such as API development, system integration, and cloud platforms.

Job description

OT SYSTEMS INTEGRATION ENGINEER (BAS / HVAC)
The Select Group is seeking an OT Systems Integration Engineer to support one of our top communications clients in designing and implementing the Virtual Building Automation System (VBAS) automation logic at their mission critical facilities. This resource will build the stage-up and stage-down automation sequences that respond to thermal and electrical threshold triggers, integrate with existing HVAC controller interfaces from Eaton, Siemens, Liebert (Vertiv), and other vendors, and implement the safety interlock and manual override framework. This is primarily a remote opportunity that will require occasional onsite work as needed in Downingtown, PA.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years in HVAC controls engineering or building automation systems integration.
  • Programming experience with industrial protocols. Hands-on experience designing programs that integrate via BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, OPC-UA, or LON (read and write configuration).
  • Automation logic programming. Experience designing, developing, and modifying automation logic programs in BAS platforms: Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo CC, Schneider EcoStruxure, Honeywell, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE A2 thermal environment specifications for data centers or critical facilities.
  • Field commissioning experience - must be comfortable on-site at live operating facilities.
  • Ability to interpret HVAC drawings, sequence of operations, and control panel documentation.
  • Edge gateway programming. Familiarity with edge gateway concepts; AWS IoT Greengrass v2 component program experience preferred (willingness to adopt is acceptable).

Bonus Experience
  • Experience with co-location, telecom headend, or hyperscaler datacenter facility environments.
  • Familiarity with AWS IoT SiteWise Edge or equivalent industrial cloud gateway programs.
  • Experience designing programs for AI/ML-driven automation platforms or predictive control systems.
  • Familiarity with Eaton Foreseer or vendor-specific monitoring platforms in the Comcast footprint.
  • Python programming for automation logic test programs or API integration programs.
  • Knowledge of NIST SP 800-82 (Operational Technology security) or Purdue Model network segmentation.
  • Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or equivalent credential.
  • Experience with containment systems: hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment, in-row cooling.

What You'll Do
  • Automation logic program design and development. Apply systems analysis techniques to determine functional specifications; design, develop, document, test, and modify stage-up and stage-down automation logic programs based on ASHRAE A2 thermal thresholds and electrical load signals.
  • Integration program development. Design and modify integration programs connecting the automation control logic with existing HVAC controller interfaces using BACnet/IP (primary), BACnet MS/TP (legacy serial), Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC-UA (preferred for newer systems), or vendor-specific APIs from Eaton, Siemens, Liebert, and Foreseer.
  • Edge component program deployment. Design, develop, document, deploy, and modify AWS IoT Greengrass v2 component programs at site for protocol translation and local buffering during connectivity loss.
  • SiteWise Edge gateway configuration program. Design and modify AWS IoT SiteWise Edge gateway configuration programs to consume facility telemetry via BACnet, Modbus, and OPC-UA connectors.
  • Safety interlock program implementation. Design, develop, test, and modify safety interlock programs: manual override capability, minimum cycle time enforcement, alert escalation, override audit trail.
  • POC execution and program validation. Execute the HVAC Automation POC at the two Downingtown pilot sites in Recommend Mode with the Comcast facilities team supervising every recommendation; analyze program output and modify automation programs based on operator feedback.
  • POC results analysis and documentation. Document POC results: response latency, setpoint accuracy, false-positive rate, operator feedback, PUE and EPCB outcome metrics against pre-POC baseline.
  • Automation sequence validation. Validate automation sequence programs against Comcast-approved operating parameters; coordinate vendor support engagements (Eaton, Siemens, Liebert) where controller access requires vendor configuration.
  • Test program collaboration. Support the QA/Integration Analyst during test execution; analyze test results and design corrective program modifications.
  • Specification documentation. Produce automation logic program specifications, control flow diagrams, and commission documentation.
