Our RN Advice nurses manage symptomatic patient messages, providing advice for home remedies, symptoms to watch out for, and when to come see a doctor. They also perform patient teaching, triage walk-ins, and respond to codes.

Job Summary: Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Possession of a current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nursing License.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Knowledge of principles/skills needed to provide nursing assessment, intervention, and treatment.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medication indications for use and their effects on patients.
  • Knowledge of patient education principles to assist patients in caring for themselves.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
  • Skill in using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures.
  • Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in updating and maintaining patient records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions. Ability to problem-solve and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to read, understand, and respond to detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing assignments and work pace.
  • Ability to utilize computer programs expected for patient care (Epic, SC Fox, etc.) and access patient information from the internet, and the ability to type at least 30 wpm.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Proficient I.V. skills.
  • Current CPR certification.

Essential Functions:

  • Respond to and refer incoming telephone calls. Instruct patient and family regarding medication and treatment instructions. Utilize triage protocols within Epic as appropriate.
  • Provide education to patients regarding management of chronic disease, gestational diabetes, as well as instruction on the use of a glucometer and self-injection techniques.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatment in accordance with nursing standards. This includes IV insertion and infusion of fluids as requested by the provider. Assess, record, and report to the physician information relating to the patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments.
  • Schedule same day appointments as appropriate and ensure preferences are given to patients with emergent needs.
  • Review lab and other test results of providers that are out of the office. Alert the on call provider regarding abnormal test results as directed in the protocol "Lab Review by Licensed Staff for Provider on Vacation".
  • Provide wound care as requested, including Unna boot application and changes.
  • Oversee appointment booking and ensure preferences are given to patients with emergent needs. Maintain timely flow of patients throughout the day.
  • Arrange for patient testing and admissions.
  • Complete OB intake nurse visits.
  • Respond to overhead pages for triage. Provide patient assessment and referral to primary care, Urgent Care or the ED as appropriate.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Adhere to safe principles of lifting, patient transfer and ergonomics.
  • Serve as a clinical resource to medical assistants and licensed practical nurses.

Other Duties:

  • Perform related work as required.
  • Function as back-up supervisor in absence of full-time nursing team leader if requested.
  • Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
  • Assist in departmental chores and non-patient care assignments.
