What is the job of an information technology assistant?

As an information technology assistant, your job is to troubleshoot and repair computers for a business or government agency. IT assistants frequently install new hardware and software, configure existing systems to meet the organization's needs, return defective products to vendors, negotiate prices on new equipment, and monitor network use. You may also help prepare department budgets, replace equipment while following an upgrade schedule, and evaluate the relevance of emerging technology. When working for the government, you may be asked to participate in emergency response and remain at work in spite of evacuations. Some IT assistants are on-call for support outside of regular hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an information technology assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Information Technology Assistant, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, software troubleshooting, and network basics, often supported by an associate degree or relevant certifications like CompTIA A+. Familiarity with help desk ticketing systems, operating systems (Windows, macOS), and basic networking tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills are crucial for efficiently resolving technical issues, supporting organizational productivity, and ensuring smooth IT operations.

How does an information technology assistant typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Information Technology Assistants often work closely with various departments to resolve technical issues, set up new hardware or software, and ensure smooth operation of IT systems. They may assist in onboarding new employees by configuring workstations and user accounts, and frequently communicate with non-technical staff to troubleshoot problems or provide basic IT training. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts into easy-to-understand terms, fostering effective collaboration across teams.

Job description

CAVH of Central Florida, LLC. Clearwater, Florida, United States

About this Position

About CAVH HVAC

Custom Air Ventilation & Heating (CAVH) is a multi-location company with approximately 55 employees across our Corporate, Miami, Cape Coral, and Casselberry offices. We are a leading commercial HVAC material supplier who recently brought IT in house and are building a modern, well‑run technology environment from the ground up. This is a chance to join a lean, fast‑moving team where your work has direct, visible impact across the whole company.

Summary

We are hiring an IT Operations & Automation Specialist to be a true hands‑on technologist. This is first and foremost an operations and support role: you will keep our people productive day to day, own our Microsoft 365 environment, and help maintain the network and security infrastructure that runs across all our sites. Automation and AI work is part of the role and a real opportunity to grow it over time, but it is layered on top of solid daily operations, not in place of them.

If you enjoy solving real problems for real people, want variety in your day, and like the idea of helping shape how a growing company uses technology, this role is for you. If you are looking strictly for an AI or automation engineering seat with no operational responsibilities, this is not the right fit, and we want to be upfront about that.

Key Responsibilities Helpdesk & End User Support
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day to day IT support across all CAVH locations, handling hardware, software, account, and connectivity issues.
  • Manage tickets end to end in Freshservice, meeting SLAs and keeping users informed from first response through resolution.
  • Handle onboarding and offboarding, including account provisioning, device setup, and access changes.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge base articles, documentation, and self‑service resources.
Microsoft 365 Administration
  • Administer the Microsoft 365 tenant day to day, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, and user and license management.
  • Manage identity and access through Entra ID, including user accounts, groups, MFA, and conditional access policies.
  • Support and maintain the SharePoint document environment and Teams structure.
  • Apply security and compliance best practices across the M365 environment.
Network, Firewall & Infrastructure
  • Help maintain network infrastructure across all sites, including firewalls, managed switches, VLANs, and VPN and remote access.
  • Support endpoint protection (Sophos XDR) and physical security systems (Verkada).
  • Assist with troubleshooting connectivity, performance, and site‑to‑site issues.
  • Support device lifecycle and the laptop refresh program, from procurement through deployment and retirement.
Automation & AI
  • Over time, help build and maintain workflow automations using Power Automate, PowerShell, and API integrations to reduce manual effort.
  • Support AI assistant and agent initiatives that streamline support, reporting, and internal processes.
  • Contribute ideas for where automation can improve how the business runs, and help bring them to life as the role matures.
Physical Requirements
  • Spending significant time at a workstation and using a computer.
Ideal Candidates
  • Passionate about customer service
  • Positive, energetic, and solution oriented
  • Skilled in recognizing and capitalizing on opportunities
  • Driven by success
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands‑on IT support or systems administration experience in a business environment.
  • Solid working experience administering Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, user and license management).
  • Experience with a helpdesk or ITSM ticketing system; Freshservice experience is a strong plus.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals, firewalls, and managed switches.
  • Experience with Entra ID (Azure AD), MFA, and access management.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a genuinely helpful, customer service oriented attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical topics to non‑technical people.
  • Reliable, self‑directed, and comfortable being the go‑to IT person on site.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Power Automate, PowerShell scripting, or API integrations.
  • Exposure to AI assistants, automation tools, or low‑code platforms.
  • Experience supporting multiple locations.
  • In office
Compensation
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, short‑term and long‑term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
