We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Human Resources department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for a Sr. Workforce Relations Specialist. 

Pay Scale:

$73,200 - $96,600

Shift : ALL

Security Clearance: No Clearance

PURPOSE AND FUNCTIONS

The Senior Employee and Labor Relations Specialist will support and help maintain all employee relations programs. This position serves as an internal consultant to employees, supervisors, and managers on policies, programs and issues related to employee relations, union relations and workforce management. The Senior Employee and Labor Relations Specialist will promote retention and productivity by creating and fostering open communication between employees and supervision and assist in administering employee relations compliance programs. This position reports to the Manager of Workforce Relations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Both education and experience are taken into consideration.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in labor relations or employee relations is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Personnel Administration, Industrial Relations or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to establish strong cross functional relationships and to effectively interact and influence employees throughout the company.
  • Ability to conduct conflict resolution, investigations, grievances, and other employee relations issues.
  • Exhibit high levels of discretion, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Experience in collective bargaining in an industrial environment.
  • Expert knowledge of union contract administration including grievance handling, problem resolution, and contract negotiations.
  • Expert knowledge of legal requirements affecting labor relations administration such as NLRA, Title IV, etc.
  • Demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating factual allegations and recommending effective solutions affecting labor relations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to exercise good judgment and appropriate discretion. Ability to work under pressure and diffuse emotions in difficult situations.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Counsels and advises employees on workplace issues such as attendance, performance and interpersonal communication; advises on opportunities for remediation of workplace conflicts, and escalating when appropriate.
  • Participates in union grievance administration and assumes responsibility for grievance administration in the absence of the Manager of Workforce Relations.
  • Administers the Substance Abuse Program, Attendance Control Program, and the Company’s Standards of Conduct.
  • Conducts investigations involving employees to include represented, non-represented, and contract workers as well as other compliance-related matters.
  • Prepares corrective action memos and written warnings.
  • Reviews and recommends appropriate follow-up action for employees who are absent without approved leave.
  • Manages the tracking and analysis of employee relations metrics.
  • Completes assigned projects as needed involving the research and organization of information used for the development or modification of polices or procedures.
  • Assists with the preparation for union negotiations, arbitration, NLRB hearings, Wage and Hour claims, and other hearings as directed.
  • Consistently enters and updates case details in the case management system.
  • Actively participates in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.  While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear.  The noise level in this environment is usually moderate.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Manager of Workforce Relations. Interacts with all levels of employees, including managers, supervisors, union representatives, represented employees, and external agencies or vendors.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of this job.
  • Must be willing to travel and have reliable transportation.  
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and qualify for a Common Access Card (CAC) or DBIDS badge
  • Must have reliable record of attendance and punctuality and be available for overtime as required.
  • Must be able to physically transit all areas of the facility.
  • Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects or controls, and to talk and hear. 
  • Must have good eye/hand coordination. 
  • Ability to use work provided cell phones and desktop computers. 
  • Ability to tolerate moderate noise levels.
