What are Infection Control Interns?

Infection Control Interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work under the supervision of infection prevention professionals in healthcare settings. Their primary role is to assist in monitoring, investigating, and reducing the spread of infectious diseases within hospitals or clinics. They may help with data collection, analyzing infection trends, participating in staff education, and supporting infection prevention initiatives. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience in healthcare safety, epidemiology, and public health practices. The position is ideal for those interested in pursuing a career in infection control, nursing, public health, or related fields.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an Infection Control Intern expect during their internship?

As an Infection Control Intern, you can anticipate involvement in a variety of projects such as assisting with hospital surveillance activities, analyzing infection data, supporting outbreak investigations, and helping to develop educational materials for staff. Interns often work closely with infection preventionists, nurses, and epidemiologists, gaining hands-on experience with both administrative tasks and fieldwork. This role typically offers exposure to committee meetings, policy reviews, and compliance audits, providing a comprehensive view of infection prevention practices. The experience gained can be a strong foundation for future roles in public health or healthcare quality management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infection Control Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infection Control Intern, a foundational understanding of microbiology, public health principles, and infection prevention practices—often supported by coursework in health sciences or related fields—is essential. Familiarity with data analysis tools, electronic health record systems, and knowledge of CDC or WHO infection control guidelines is typically required. In the southern part of Franklin County, the borough of Waynesboro sits just two miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line and is known for its rich industrial history.

Franklin County is in the heart of Central Pennsylvania, where you'll find mountains, lakes and a picturesque countryside coupled with theater, music, skiing, hunting, fishing and much more. We're in the heart of America's fruit orchards, so peaches, apples and lots of other local produce are available close by. The area features local wineries and breweries, along with a vibrant arts scene at the historic Capitol Theatre and Totem Pole Playhouse. Franklin County merges the best of small-town friendliness with easy access to metropolitan areas. (Patient population: 154,000)
