Department Summary

The Native American and Indigenous Studies program is housed in the Department of Sociology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at San Jose State University. The department is part of the College of Social Sciences and is committed to equitable, inclusive, culturally sustaining, and academically affirming teaching and learning.

Native American and Indigenous Studies is an interdisciplinary field that centers Native American and Indigenous histories, epistemologies, sovereignties, self-determination, cultures, communities, and contemporary issues. The program supports students in developing critical understandings of settler colonialism, tribal sovereignty, Indigenous governance, cultural and language revitalization, urban Indigenous experiences, environmental justice, gender and sexuality, decolonial theory, and Indigenous futures.

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment, funding, curricular needs, and SJSU Online program needs. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching at short notice. SJSU Online courses may be offered in accelerated terms and may include asynchronous, synchronous, or bichronous online instruction.

Brief Description of Duties

Teach assigned Native American and Indigenous Studies courses in the SJSU Online curriculum, including lower-division and upper-division undergraduate courses, as needed.

• Conduct weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load and course modality
• Participate in assessment of student learning to support continuous improvement of teaching, learning, curriculum quality, and accreditation requirements.
• Work collaboratively with program faculty, department leadership, instructional designers, and SJSU Online staff to support course quality, rigor, relevance, accessibility, and consistency.
• Attend required meetings, orientations, trainings, and professional development related to SJSU Online teaching, Canvas, accessibility, student support, assessment, or program coordination.
• Use inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive course materials, teaching strategies, and student engagement practices.
• Provide timely communication, feedback, grading, and student support appropriate to online instruction and accelerated online terms.
• Follow university, college, department, and SJSU Online policies and procedures related to instruction, student privacy, accessibility, academic integrity, and professional conduct.
• Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity-including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation-through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
• Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications 

• M.A. or other appropriate advanced degree in Native American and Indigenous Studies or a closely related fi eld.
• Expertise in one or more areas relevant to the Native American and Indigenous Studies curriculum, including but not limited to Indigenous studies, American Indian studies, California Indian history, tribal sovereignty, settler colonialism, Indigenous governance, environmental studies, gender and sexuality, Indigenous literature, culture and language reclamation, revitalization, or decolonial studies.
• Knowledge of the subject matter of the course or courses to which the individual is assigned.
• Ability to teach and evaluate adult learners in an online learning environment.
• Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
• Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as may have been gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, community-engaged work, or other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of teaching experience.
• Prior teaching experience at the college or university level.
• Evidence of excellence in teaching.
• Experience designing, teaching, and assessing online, hybrid, asynchronous, synchronous, or bichronous courses.
• Experience teaching accelerated online courses or courses serving working adult learners, transfer students, and other post-traditional student populations.
• Experience with Canvas or comparable learning management systems.
• Experience with accessible course design, inclusive pedagogy, universal design for learning, and culturally sustaining teaching practices.
• Expertise in inter/transdisciplinary and decolonial pedagogies.
• Experience teaching courses that meet Ethnic Studies, general education, or upper-division writing/inquiry learning outcomes. 

Campus Security Authority

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, the faculty coach member in this position is subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities are required to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution and to complete Clery Act training as determined by the University Clery Director. Compensation

Salary range placement is determined by qualifications and experience. The rates shown below by range are the anticipated salary from the applicable Faculty Salary Schedule - 2322 to be paid per WTU in Special Session programs (a typical course is 3 WTUs). As the salary schedule indicates, compensation may be reduced if enrollment targets are not met.

L-A / Range 2: $2279 per WTU
L-B / Range 3: $2497 per WTU
L-C / Range 4: $3146 per WTU
L-D / Range 5: $3977 per WTU

Conditional Offer

Work for this position is for a special session, online program, exempt from the requirement that all SJSU work is to be performed in California; however, this exemption may not be transferred to any other SJSU position or employment. Employment is contingent upon US residence and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Satisfactory completion of background and reference checks (including criminal records and prior employment) are required. SJSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background and reference checks reveal disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background and reference checks may affect the continued employment of a current employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the "Order of Work," or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
