Overview

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is one of the two largest colleges at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo with two major divisions: Humanities and Social Sciences. CAS offers Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees, Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees, Master's degrees, and specialized undergraduate certificates in various programs. Utilizing the unique educational environment at UH Hilo, CAS prepares students for professional careers by providing students with an opportunity to achieve a common basis for intellectual discourse that satisfies the demands of both profession and citizenship.
The UH Hilo School of Education serves as a resource to area educators teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts as well as guides action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning, providing high quality, integrated, inquiry-and-place-based undergraduate and graduate programs.
This full-time, tenure-track position will provide instruction across multiple programs as well as engaging in partnerships with schools, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education. This work requires a deep understanding of issues related to elementary education, literacy development, education in rural settings, place-based education, education in the Pacific, and education in formal and informal environments.
Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach undergraduate and graduate campus-based and distance learning courses in teacher education, with an emphasis in elementary teacher preparation for general education teachers and other areas as needed and assigned.
2. Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
3. Supervise and support teacher candidates in schools.
4. Engage in curriculum development, program assessment, and accreditation.
5. Engage in scholarly work and publication.
6. Perform service to the institution and discipline.
7. Engage in partnerships with schools and other community partners, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST) programs, and the Hawaii Department of Education.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment.
2. A minimum of three years working in K-6 education settings.
3. Specialization in an area associated with literacy development or a related field.
4. Demonstrated ability to teach courses to prepare elementary teachers.
5. Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda or publications.

Desirable Qualifications
Evidence of:

1. Successful experience working in Hawaii K-6 school systems or other school systems with students from diverse backgrounds.
2. Evidence of ability to teach students at the undergraduate and graduate level.
3. Evidence of effective teaching on the development of reading and writing to students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in classroom settings.
4. Experience with school accreditation or program evaluation.
5. Experience with education in Hawaii.
6. Experience teaching or working with rural schools.
7. Experience with place-based education.
