What is an independent contractor sales professional?

Independent contractor sales jobs refer to a wide array of positions in which you work as a sales representative on a freelance basis. Your duties and responsibilities vary depending on the products or services you sell on behalf of your clients. You may sell goods to existing customers or promote goods to potential customers on a sales lead list. Independent sales representatives are paid on a commission basis, if and when they make a sale or provide a lead that turns into a sale. Business-to-business (B2B) salespeople develop relationships with companies and attend trade shows to make new contacts.

How does an independent contractor sales role typically structure compensation and manage client relationships compared to traditional sales positions?

As an Independent Contractor in Sales, your compensation is often commission-based, meaning your earnings are directly tied to your sales performance rather than a fixed salary. You are usually responsible for developing and maintaining your own client relationships, which requires strong self-motivation and excellent communication skills. Unlike traditional employees, independent contractors enjoy a high degree of flexibility but must manage their own schedules, prospecting, and follow-ups. Building a solid client base and reputation is key to long-term success in this role.

Position Title: Solar Sales Consultant

Company Name: OnSite Energy, Inc.

Compensation: 1099 Independent Contractor | Uncapped Commission

Average Commission: $2,000 to 4,000 per closed deal up to $275,000

Industry: Residential Solar & Battery Sales

Location: Tomkins Cove, NY / In-Home and Virtual Appointments

OnSite Energy provides the leads, appointments, technology, training, operational support, and infrastructure. You bring the ability to close.

Job Overview

OnSite Energy, Inc. is seeking experienced, driven Solar Sales Consultants who know how to close and want consistent opportunities in front of them.

This is not a “here’s a shirt and a territory—good luck” sales role. We invest heavily in customer acquisition and provide daily company-generated leads and appointments, allowing you to focus on what drives your income: running appointments, following up, and closing deals.

If you have solar-sales experience, communicate confidently with homeowners, and are motivated by uncapped commission potential, this is an opportunity to sell with a company that has the infrastructure to support the sale from contract through installation.

Who We Are

OnSite Energy, Inc. is a field-first residential solar company built by installers—not salespeople. With in-house crews, licensed electricians, experienced project managers, and dedicated operations support, we deliver high-quality solar and battery solutions while keeping projects moving.

Our sales consultants are backed by the tools, technology, training, financing options, and operational team needed to create a strong customer experience and build a productive pipeline. Learn more at onsiteenergyusa.com.

Why OnSite Energy?

  • Daily access to company-generated solar leads and appointments
  • Opportunity to run both company-provided and self-generated business
  • Average commission of approximately 2,000–4,000 per closed deal
  • Productive consultants can target 6–8 sales per month
  • Uncapped commission structure with additional upside from referrals and self-generated sales
  • One of our top consultants earned $275,000 last year
  • Eligible commission payments begin at the Stamped Engineering (M1) milestone, with remaining commissions paid after installation
  • Projects can typically move from site survey to scheduled installation in approximately 30 days
  • $500 onboarding training stipend upon successful completion

Individual results vary. This is a commission-based opportunity, and earnings are not guaranteed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run company-provided and self-generated solar sales appointments
  • Conduct virtual and in-home consultations with homeowners
  • Identify homeowners’ energy needs and present appropriate solar and battery solutions
  • Prepare proposals and execute customer agreements
  • Educate customers on available financing options
  • Follow up consistently with prospects and manage an active pipeline
  • Generate referrals and develop additional self-generated business
  • Maintain accurate and timely CRM records
  • Stay engaged with customers as projects progress toward installation
  • Work collaboratively with design, engineering, financing, and operations teams to support a smooth customer experience

Qualifications

  • Previous residential solar sales experience required
  • Proven ability to sell, close, and manage a high-value sales pipeline
  • Confident, professional communication skills with homeowners
  • Strong follow-up habits and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working independently as a 1099 contractor
  • Motivated by performance-based, uncapped commission income
  • Coachable, competitive, accountable, and driven to improve
  • Experience with in-home or other high-ticket sales is a plus
  • Familiarity with CRM systems, proposals, and digital contracting platforms preferred

Support and Resources

  • Daily company-generated leads and appointments
  • Residential solar and battery solutions
  • Competitive financing options
  • CRM and sales technology
  • Proposal and contracting platforms
  • Dedicated design, engineering, and operations support
  • Sales training and ongoing coaching
  • Marketing and pipeline support
  • Established installation team to help projects move forward after the sale

Schedule

  • Independent contractor opportunity
  • Flexible schedule based on customer appointments and sales activity
  • Availability for evenings and weekends may be needed to accommodate homeowner appointments

Location

  • Residential appointments in the Tomkins Cove, NY service area
  • Mix of in-home and virtual consultations
  • No overnight travel required

Important Notice

This is a 1099 independent-contractor, commission-only sales opportunity. There is no guaranteed salary or guaranteed income. We are looking for experienced solar sales professionals who are confident in their ability to perform when given consistent, qualified opportunities.
