Job description

Our organization, recognized as a leading military healthcare facility, is the oldest continuously operating Navy hospital and serves as a vital treatment center in the Hampton Roads area. As a primary referral hub for military medical facilities along the East Coast and in Europe, we cater to a diverse beneficiary population, including active-duty personnel, retirees, and their families. The medical center is equipped with 102 beds for medical, surgical, obstetric, and ICU care, along with 32 beds dedicated to adult mental health. We feature 18 operating rooms, with 12 in daily use, and support 13 graduate medical education programs, hosting around 250 residents each year. Additionally, we are proud to be the only Level II trauma center within the Military Health System, offering extensive orthopedic services through our Bone and Joint Sports Medicine Institute.

Position Overview

The organization is seeking a contract Sports Medicine Physician to deliver thorough outpatient musculoskeletal and sports medicine care at our Bone and Joint Sports Medicine Institute. This physician will assess, diagnose, and manage both acute and chronic orthopedic and sports-related issues affecting active-duty members, retirees, and eligible beneficiaries. The role demands strong clinical judgment, collaboration across disciplines, and a focus on restoring function, enhancing performance, and facilitating a return to duty, activity, or sport.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed patient histories, physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for a variety of musculoskeletal and sports medicine conditions.
  • Assess overuse injuries, acute athletic injuries, concussion-related issues, joint and soft tissue disorders, and other factors that influence readiness and performance.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, coordinating referrals, rehabilitation strategies, and follow-up care with orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, radiology, and other specialty services.
  • Provide non-operative management in sports medicine, including evidence-based treatment recommendations, activity modifications, patient education, and procedural interventions within the scope of practice.
  • Document all patient interactions in the electronic health record, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and multidisciplinary collaboration standards consistent with military treatment facility protocols.
Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. with successful completion of postgraduate training.
  • Possession of a current, valid, unrestricted medical license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of full-time clinical experience in Orthopedics or Sports Medicine within the last five (5) years.
  • Board Certification in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Preventive Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Completion of at least a one-year Sports Medicine fellowship or possession of a Certificate of Added/Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine.
  • Current individual Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
  • Maintenance of current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; additional life support certifications may be necessary.
  • This is a contract role at a military facility, requiring compliance with all credentialing, privileging, and background checks, including U.S. citizenship if mandated by the installation.
Work Schedule

The provider will be expected to fulfill a total of 1,912 hours over a 12-month performance period as outlined in the relevant section. Scheduling will be determined based on the needs of our organization and must be coordinated with the government scheduling officer. While it is anticipated that the provider will work 80 hours every two weeks, there is no obligation for the organization to guarantee this schedule.
