Job description

Position Title: Special Education Paraprofessional  - Vision
Non-Exempt
Site: District Wide as assigned by Teacher of the Visually Impaired
Direct Supervisor : Director of Special Education
Contracted Length Term: 180 Days - Para: SpecEd, Comp, Class. Calendar
Salary Schedule: Building Level Support Non Exempt (range $19.57 - $24.10/hour based on the 26/27 salary schedules and  related experience)
Start Date: August 12, 2026 - May 20, 2027 - Limited Term

Vision Paraprofessional Position Summary















Under the direction and supervision of the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), the Vision Paraprofessional provides direct instructional and classroom support to students with visual impairments and or blindness. The paraprofessional assists with implementing educational programs, reinforcing orientation and mobility skills, supporting access to assistive technology and specialized learning materials, facilitating communication, and promoting independence across school environments. This position works collaboratively with the TVI/Orientation and Mobility Specialist, special education staff, and classroom teachers to ensure students have equitable access to instruction and school activities while fostering independence and self-advocacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.
  • Assist in the management of student behavior through the use of positive strategies and techniques.
  • Prepare and assist in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids for use with individual or small groups of students.
  • Maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and information.
  • Assist in maintaining an orderly, and positive learning environment.
  • Assist the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) in providing individualized support to students with visual impairments, ensuring they have equal access to the curriculum and school activities.
  • Create tactile books and graphics, educational materials, and hands-on activities tailored to students' specific learning needs and abilities.
  • Work directly with students to facilitate their learning, using appropriate adaptive technologies and teaching methods.
  • Deliver materials, such as braille books, tactile graphics, and other specialized resources and equipment, to schools within the district.
  • Maintain and organize educational materials and supplies for use by the students and TVI.
  • Assist with ongoing assessments and progress tracking to ensure that each student's learning needs are met effectively.
  • Collaborate with other school staff, including classroom teachers, special education personnel, and administrative teams, to ensure a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to supporting students with visual impairments.
  • Operate and assist students in the operation of a variety of instructional media machines and equipment.
  • Assisting with the daily physical needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Teacher of the Visually Impaired.

Experience/Education:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience:
Prefer One year of paid or volunteer experience working with groups of children.
Education:
High School Diploma
Desirable: Equivalent of 48 credit hours from an accredited college/university, an Associate's Degree from an accredited college/university, or proof of proficiency by passing a District accepted test.
Knowledge of and Abilities:
Knowledge of:









  • Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics.
  • Student behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Basic arithmetic concepts.
  • Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures. 

Ability to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English and a second language, as required by the assignment.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment.
  • Be trained by District Nurses to perform a number of health-related activities.
  • Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.  

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 5 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves sitting, walking, and/or standing.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
  • CBI/FBI background clearance and a clean driving record.
