Job description

Kindergarten Teacher's Aide

Position Summary

The Kindergarten Teacher's Aide works collaboratively with the classroom teacher to create a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment for kindergarten students. This position provides instructional and behavioral support throughout the school day, with an emphasis on small-group instruction, individual student support, and helping all students successfully participate in classroom learning.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with young children, builds positive relationships with students, and is able to provide patient, consistent support while maintaining high expectations for student learning and behavior.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Work closely with the classroom teacher to support daily instruction and classroom learning.
  • Lead or support small-group instruction in areas such as early literacy, math, and other foundational kindergarten skills using materials and plans provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Provide individual assistance to students as they complete classroom assignments, practice skills, and participate in learning activities.
  • Reinforce skills and concepts previously taught by the classroom teacher.
  • Help students develop independence, persistence, and appropriate learning habits.
  • Assist with preparing, organizing, and managing instructional materials as needed.

Classroom & Behavioral Support

  • Support students during whole-group instruction by helping them remain engaged, follow classroom expectations, and participate appropriately.
  • Provide proactive redirection and positive reinforcement to help students successfully manage classroom routines and behaviors.
  • Assist students with transitions between activities and learning environments.
  • Help maintain consistent classroom routines and expectations established by the classroom teacher.
  • Model respectful communication, problem-solving, and positive interactions.
  • Support students in developing independence and age-appropriate social and self-regulation skills.

Student Support & Collaboration

  • Build positive, supportive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Communicate regularly with the classroom teacher regarding student progress, needs, behaviors, and concerns.
  • Follow teacher direction regarding instructional strategies, behavior supports, accommodations, and individual student needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, specialists, administrators, and other school staff to support student success.
  • Supervise and support students during classroom activities and other assigned portions of the school day.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with young children is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with kindergarten-aged students in both small-group and individual settings.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and teacher direction.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, dependability, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to respond calmly and consistently to student behavior.
  • Willingness to learn and implement instructional and behavioral strategies provided by teachers and school staff.

Physical & Professional Expectations

The Kindergarten Teacher's Aide should be comfortable working in an active early-elementary classroom environment. The position may require sitting or working on the floor with students, moving throughout the classroom, assisting with classroom materials, and actively supervising young children.

Above all, the Kindergarten Teacher's Aide is an important member of the classroom team who helps ensure that kindergarten students are known, supported, challenged, and able to successfully engage in learning each day.
