These roles typically involve monitoring premises, checking IDs, and maintaining safety, making them accessible for those new to security work.

What is an Independent Contractor Comsec Security specialist?

An Independent Contractor Comsec (Communications Security) Security specialist is a professional who provides security services related to protecting sensitive communication and information. They work independently, often on a contract basis, to assess, implement, and maintain security measures that prevent unauthorized access to classified or sensitive data. This role may involve tasks like risk assessment, vulnerability testing, and ensuring compliance with government or organizational security standards. The contractor may work with government agencies, private companies, or other organizations needing specialized security expertise.

What is the role of Comsec in cybersecurity?

In cybersecurity, Comsec (communications security) involves protecting sensitive information and communications from interception or unauthorized access. For an Independent Contractor Comsec Security role, this includes implementing encryption, secure communication protocols, and ensuring compliance with security standards to safeguard data and systems.

What are some common challenges faced by Independent Contractor Comsec Security professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Independent Contractor Comsec Security professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to diverse client environments, staying updated with evolving communication security technologies, and managing sensitive information responsibly. Since they work independently, building trust with clients and maintaining compliance with security protocols is essential. To address these challenges, contractors should invest in continuous training, establish clear communication with clients, and maintain strict adherence to industry standards and legal requirements.

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Comsec Security, you need a strong background in communications security protocols, risk assessment, and often a relevant security clearance or degree in information security. Work EnvironmentSelf-employed, flexible hours, various client sitesEmployed by security companies, fixed shifts at specific locations
Employer & Industry UsageWorks independently or contracts with security firms in security industryEmployed by security firms or organizations, in security industry

Independent Contractor Comsec Security professionals typically operate independently, offering security services on a freelance basis, often with specialized certifications. Security Guards are usually employed by security companies, working fixed shifts at designated sites. Both roles require security licensing, but contractors enjoy more flexibility and varied work environments compared to the more structured security guard positions.

Can a security guard be an independent contractor?

A security guard can work as an independent contractor if they operate as a self-employed individual or through a business entity, rather than as an employee. This arrangement often requires the guard to handle their own taxes, insurance, and licensing, and they typically have more control over their work schedule and methods. However, some security companies may classify guards as employees, so job seekers should clarify employment status and contractual terms before accepting a position.

  • Coordinate with Government personnel and contractor teammates to triage issues, determine root cause, and escalate to Tier 3/engineering/vendor support when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate ticketing, maintenance logs, and status reporting; ensure work is documented in accordance with Government processes and security requirements.
  • Assist with inventory accountability and serviceability checks for COMSEC equipment and related peripherals, as directed.
  • Support end-user guidance and technical assistance on approved procedures for equipment setup, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in proficiency activities and recurring sustainment actions to ensure continued readiness and compliance.

  • Top Secret Clearance.
  • Demonstrated Tier 2 technical support experience (e.g., troubleshooting, incident resolution, and customer support).
  • Ability to learn and apply Government procedures, technical orders, and local operating instructions.
  • Strong documentation skills, including accurate ticket updates, maintenance actions, and status reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an integrated Government/contractor team.
  • Ability to successfully complete Government-provided ACES/SKL, fill device, and Mission Planner systems training (see Training Requirements).

If the contract employee fails to satisfactorily complete the course the second time, the individual will not meet the technical qualification requirement as an ACES and SKL technician.

Employees will be required to complete a rigorous on-the-job training (OJT) schedule developed by the Government in cooperation with the Contractor to ensure ACES/SKL Technicians remain proficient.

Security & Compliance Requirements
  • Must comply with all Government security policies and procedures related to COMSEC equipment, keying material, and controlled information.
  • Maintain required access/eligibility/clearance level as specified by the contract and the Government (as applicable).
  • Adhere to all applicable handling, accountability, and reporting requirements for COMSEC-related devices and components.
Working Conditions & Schedule

Work is typically performed in a technical support/help desk environment with hands-on interaction with COMSEC devices and associated planning systems. Work hours may include shift coverage or on-call support as required by mission needs and the contract. Occasional travel may be required if specified by the task order.
