What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Animator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Animator, you need strong artistic ability, proficiency in animation principles, and experience with industry-standard software, often supported by a degree or portfolio. Mastery of tools like Adobe After Effects, Toon Boom, or Blender, and familiarity with project management platforms is typical. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for managing client expectations and meeting deadlines independently. These skills and qualities enable successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and sustained work opportunities in a competitive freelance market.

How do Independent Contractor Animators typically manage client communication and project feedback throughout an assignment?

Independent Contractor Animators often rely on clear and consistent communication to ensure project requirements are understood and met. They usually schedule regular check-ins via email or video calls, share progress updates, and use collaborative platforms to gather client feedback. Managing revisions efficiently is crucial, as animators must balance creative input with project timelines. Building strong relationships and setting expectations upfront can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth workflow.

What are Independent Contractor Animators?

Independent Contractor Animators are professionals who create animations for clients on a contract or freelance basis, rather than as full-time employees. They may work on projects such as movies, video games, advertisements, or web content. These animators are responsible for managing their own business operations, including negotiating contracts, setting rates, and handling taxes. They often work remotely and collaborate with clients or creative teams to bring visual concepts to life through animation.

Job description

Join Us in Building the Future of Home Robotics
At Sunday, we're developing personal robots to reclaim the hours lost to repetitive tasks. We're focused on an ambitious goal to make generalized robots broadly accessible, enabling households to take back quality time.
We have spent the last 18 months building a talented team, securing capital, and validating our technology. We are now seeking passionate individuals to join us in the next phase of our growth. If you are ready to apply your skills to the forefront of robotics innovation, we'd love to hear from you.
What to Expect
As our Creative Director, you'll steward our brand's look and feel across video production, brand standards, and novel marketing deployments of Memo.
You'll manage vendors/contractors to deliver video campaigns documenting the launch and experience of our Beta, enforce consistent creative brand and tone across our social channels, and manage our visual design identity.
Longterm, you will work closely with the Head of Marketing in executing new concepts, such as showrooms and other real-life robot deployments. This entails both high-level strategic concepting, as well as fast-paced execution.
It will be your responsibility to ensure launch moments and research breakthroughs are documented and shared with the world. This includes close collaboration with our Social Media lead for brand consistency and distribution across channels.
What You'll Do
Creative Direction
  • Own the visual identity and creative direction across our website, company merch, and photography assets. Robot and companion app design managed separately from this role
  • Develop concept-to-delivery creative for product films, launch videos, demo reels, and motion assets
  • Collaborate across marketing, product, design to define tone, narrative, and visual strategy for major moments

Motion & Video
  • Lead creative for video content: product demos, announcements, behind-the-scenes, and feature spotlights
  • Oversee storyboarding, scripting, filming, directing, and editing
  • Guide motion graphics and animation that showcase robot capabilities and product experiences

Design & Brand Identity
  • Manage media kit requests, our Design Language System assets, and campaign-specific visuals + iconography
  • Design physical touchpoints such as robot beta program welcome kits, packaging, and printed materials
  • Ensure design consistency and quality across all internal and external outputs

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Management
  • Partner closely with engineering / product to translate technical features into clear, intuitive assets
  • Manage creative vendors as needed (production crews, animators, designers)

What You'll Bring
  • 4+ years of experience in creative direction, visual design, or film/video at a high-growth startup, agency, or product-focused company
  • A world-class portfolio showcasing brand, video, motion, and design work
  • Strong creative vision paired with the ability to execute quickly and independently
  • Deep expertise in video production (storyboarding, cinematography, directing, editing, sound)
  • Strong design skills: graphic design, layout, typography, color, and brand systems
  • Ability to create content that blends technical clarity with emotional resonance
  • A high bar for craft, detail, and polish - with a willingness to iterate rapidly

Nice to Have
  • Passion for robotics, emerging technology, or storytelling around complex products
  • Experience building or evolving a brand from zero-to-one
  • Motion design and animation chops (After Effects, Blender, etc.)
  • Experience designing physical or packaging experiences
  • Familiarity with robotics, hardware, AI, or industrial design
  • Ability to direct photoshoots or run a small in-house production environment
  • Experience managing or mentoring other creatives

At Sunday Robotics, we're building technology shaped by real people - curious, creative, and diverse. We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer and consider all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
Even if you don't meet every single requirement, we encourage you to apply. Studies show that women and underrepresented groups often hold back unless they meet 100% of the criteria - we don't want that to be the reason we miss out on great talent.
