JOB SUMMARY 

The Kitchen Steward plays a vital role in maintaining cleanliness, organization, and sanitation throughout the kitchen and food preparation areas. This position ensures that all kitchen equipment, utensils, and dishes are properly cleaned, stored, and ready for use, supporting the culinary and service teams. The ideal candidate is a hardworking, reliable team player who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. This role is critical to maintaining the luxury standard and reputation of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa while upholding the highest levels of discretion and professionalism.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • The Steward maintains a clean, sanitary, appealing dining environment in a high traffic members-only Fitness club.
  • Steward is responsible for washing and maintenance of dishes, pans, utensils, and food service items.  
  • Steward maintains a safe, sanitary, clean work area.  
  • Steward refills sanitation packets daily.  
  • Steward retrieves and delivers food items and supplies to and from various areas on the Campus.  
  • Stewards empties trash, removes and disposes of trash and recyclable materials to appropriate dumpsters. 
  • To maintain cleanliness and floors at refuel café, take out trash and to make sure the area is cleaned. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • High School Diploma is preferred.
  • Minimum one-year previous server experience in a fine dining restaurant
  • Must be 18 years of age and with current T.A.B.C. certification is preferred.
  • Must have ability to perform daily work at a high level of accuracy.
  • Must have alcohol beverages and wine knowledge. 
  • Must be able to take direction well.
  • Must pay attention to detail.
  • Must feel comfortable memorizing orders and specials. 
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have professional appearance and behavior. 
  • Must have interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have proficient technology skills in the POS system.
  • Must be able to multitask without getting flustered. 
  • Must perform all the duties and responsibilities in a safe manner.
  • Must be available to work a varied schedule, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Hours required: Scheduled days and hours vary based on departmental needs.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to meet the following minimum physical requirements for at least an eight-hour shift:

  • Physical Stamina: Frequent standing, walking, climbing of ladders and stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, lifting and carrying various objects weighing up to 50lbs. Employees in this position will be required to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment, where there is typically a moderate to loud noise level, work is performed in extreme temperatures, and floors surfaces may be slick.
  • Hearing / Speech: Must be able to effectively engage in one-on-one communication with guests, members, and customers and use a 2-way radio to communicate clearly and accurately with co-workers.
  • Vision: Must be able to accurately read instructions, reports, and log sheets. Must be able to work with computers and PDAs in varying light conditions.
  • Literacy: Must be able to produce, read and understand reports, including security, incident and police reports. Must be able to analyze and process written information from a variety of sources and effectively communicate content of reports.
  • Chemicals/Agents: Must be able to work safely with chemicals according to SDS sheets and all applicable laws, codes and regulatory requirements.
