Job description

As a Manager of Data Engineering within IT Data Engineering, you will lead and develop a team of Data Engineers while remaining actively engaged in the design, development, and delivery of IDEXX's global instrument data pipelines. You'll balance people leadership with hands-on technical contribution, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure data solutions.

This role serves as the people manager for a team of Data Engineers assigned across multiple Agile delivery teams, and is also an active member of an Agile delivery team, contributing directly to solution design, implementation, and delivery. You'll partner closely with Product Management, Software Engineering, Architecture, and fellow Engineering Managers to support successful product delivery and promote consistent engineering practices across the organization.

In this role, you will be responsible for...

People Leadership

  • Lead, coach, support, and develop a team of Data Engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, performance management, feedback, and career development.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing engineering culture focused on continuous learning and operational excellence.
  • Establish performance expectations aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Technical Leads, and delivery teams to support engineers embedded across multiple Agile teams.
  • Support recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, workforce planning, succession planning, and retention of engineering talent.
  • Promote engineering excellence through mentoring, knowledge sharing, and consistent engineering practices across teams.

Hands-On Engineering

  • Serve as a hands-on technical contributor on an Agile delivery team through solution design, implementation, code reviews, troubleshooting, and proof-of-concept development.
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, resilient, and secure data solutions that support IDEXX's operational and business needs.
  • Design and implement ingestion and storage solutions using AWS services such as S3, SNS, SQS, and Lambda.
  • Develop analytical data solutions leveraging Snowflake, Airflow, Apache Iceberg, dbt, and related cloud-native technologies.
  • Document solution designs, architecture decisions, and data flows to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to engineering best practices, automation, testing, observability, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support production operations, incident response, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of data platforms.

Delivery Partnership

  • Partner with Product Management and Agile delivery teams to translate business priorities into scalable technical solutions.
  • Contribute to technical planning, estimation, implementation, and delivery activities.
  • Proactively identify technical risks, remove engineering impediments, and balance feature delivery with long-term platform sustainability.
  • Leverage CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and engineering best practices to ensure delivered solutions meet quality, reliability, and performance expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to apply AI and automation to improve engineering workflows, operational processes, and delivery effectiveness.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers and Technical Leads to share knowledge, improve engineering practices, and drive continuous improvement across teams.
What You Will Need to Succeed:
  • Location: we are only considering those in the New England area, preferably Maine, but also would consider NH or MA. If near the HQ we offer a flexible hybrid requirement of only 8 days per month on-site in our Westbrook, Maine HQ. If further away in NH or MA we are open to less frequent than 8 per month.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and developing technical professionals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound technical decisions in situations with incomplete information.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and supporting operational data pipelines using modern cloud-native technologies.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Strong experience with AWS cloud services, including S3, SNS, SQS, Lambda, and related technologies.
  • Experience with Snowflake, Airflow, dbt, Apache Iceberg, or comparable modern data engineering platforms.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code technologies such as Terraform.
  • Ability to translate complex business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Typically five or more years of experience leading technical professionals through direct people management or equivalent leadership experience.
  • Experience building cloud-native data services and ETL/ELT pipelines using Infrastructure as Code and large-scale data processing technologies.
  • Experience supporting production platforms with a focus on operational excellence, monitoring, reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience working in Agile software development environments.
