What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Impact Litigation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Impact Litigation, you need a strong legal background, typically a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and expertise in constitutional or civil rights law. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, and experience with case management systems are important technical tools. Exceptional written and oral advocacy, strategic thinking, and a passion for social justice are key soft skills that distinguish impactful litigators. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully navigating complex cases, influencing legal precedents, and achieving meaningful change through the legal system.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in impact litigation, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in impact litigation often face challenges such as lengthy case timelines, complex legal research, and balancing large caseloads with limited resources. Cases may require coordination with multiple stakeholders, including clients, advocacy groups, and expert witnesses, which can add layers of complexity. To manage these challenges, impact litigators typically rely on strong organizational skills, clear communication, and teamwork within specialized legal teams. Regular collaboration and strategic planning help ensure cases are handled efficiently and effectively.

What is impact litigation?

Impact litigation refers to legal cases brought with the goal of creating significant changes in society, often by setting legal precedents or influencing public policy. Unlike traditional lawsuits that focus on resolving individual disputes, impact litigation aims to address broader systemic issues such as civil rights, environmental protection, or social justice. Lawyers and organizations involved in impact litigation carefully select cases that have the potential to benefit large groups of people or drive legal reform. This approach often involves strategic planning, coalition-building, and public advocacy in addition to courtroom work.

What is the difference between Impact Litigation vs Public Interest Litigation?

Impact Litigation typically targets broad policy or constitutional issues through strategic cases, often in law firms or NGOs. Public Interest Litigation focuses on specific social or environmental issues affecting communities, usually within nonprofit or advocacy settings. While both require legal credentials, Impact Litigation emphasizes strategic case selection for societal impact, whereas Public Interest Litigation centers on community or environmental concerns.

Job description

Impact Litigation Staff Attorney
Location: Tulsa, OK, 74126
Overview
Still She Rises, Inc. (SSR) provides free legal representation to pregnant women, women with children, and women who are child caregivers. Our direct-services legal representation focuses on defending clients who are navigating criminal, child welfare, housing, and economic justice systems. Our work is grounded in client-centered, innovative, and holistic legal representation.
Founded in North Tulsa, Still She Rises honors the dignity of the women we serve by championing our clients’ individual goals while also challenging the systemic issues that impact their lives, families, and communities.
The Impact Litigation Practice advances this mission by using litigation, legal strategy, policy analysis, and collaborative advocacy to address widespread harms caused by the systems our clients face. The practice works to create broader change beyond individual cases, while remaining closely connected to the lived experiences and legal needs of SSR’s clients.
Still She Rises seeks a highly motivated attorney with a demonstrated commitment to indigent defense, civil rights, racial justice, and systemic advocacy to join the Impact Litigation Practice.
About the Role
The Attorney in the Impact Litigation Practice will work closely with the Director of Impact Litigation to identify, develop, and pursue litigation and legal strategies aimed at achieving systemic change. This role is responsible for supporting affirmative and defensive litigation that has the potential to create broad impact for SSR’s client population and the communities we serve.
This position requires strong legal research and writing skills, strategic thinking, creativity, sound judgment, and a commitment to collaborative advocacy. The Impact Litigation Attorney will help develop legal theories, draft pleadings and briefs, participate in litigation strategy, support amicus and legislative analysis efforts, and collaborate with attorneys, advocates, and investigators across SSR’s practice areas.
The role is both externally and internally facing. Externally, the attorney may work with local and national partners, co-counsel, community organizations, and law firms. Internally, the attorney will serve as a strategic resource to SSR’s direct-services teams by helping identify recurring legal issues, develop arguments and resources, and support training on complex or systemic legal questions.
Responsibilities
  • Working closely with the Director of Impact Litigation to develop and pursue creative litigation strategies designed to achieve systemic change.
  • Engaging in all stages of developing and litigating affirmative, complex civil rights cases in federal and state court, including:
    • Identifying patterns, recurring legal issues, and systemic barriers arising from SSR’s direct-services work.
    • Supporting case investigation, factual development, legal theory development, and litigation strategy.
    • Conducting legal research; drafting pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, discovery, public records requests, and other litigation materials; delivering oral arguments; and conducting hearings, trials, and appeals.
    • Representing individual clients in affirmative or defensive litigation where the outcome may have a broader impact on SSR’s client population.
  • Collaborating with SSR attorneys, advocates, investigators, and other team members across practice areas to develop legal arguments and strategies for deployment by direct-services colleagues facing complex or frequently occurring issues.
  • Developing trainings, written resources, practice guides, or other tools to support SSR’s direct-services legal teams.
  • Leading or contributing to amicus efforts locally and nationally.
  • Analyzing and consulting on pending state legislation, policy proposals, or other legal developments that may impact SSR’s clients and communities.
  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with local and national advocacy organizations, law firms, community partners, and co-counsel.
  • Participating in internal practice meetings, case strategy discussions, and organizational efforts connected to SSR’s broader mission and values.
  • Maintaining high standards of professionalism, ethics, confidentiality, and client-centered advocacy.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must have:
  • J.D. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
  • Membership in good standing with the Oklahoma Bar or eligibility for admission to the Oklahoma Bar.
Successful applicants will demonstrate:
  • Excellent research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Familiarity with constitutional law, civil rights law, and/or complex litigation.
  • Strong legal judgment and the ability to think creatively about litigation and systemic advocacy.
  • Self-motivation, with the ability and desire to work both independently and under supervision.
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to client-centered, holistic, and trauma-informed advocacy.
  • Enthusiasm and aptitude for working in and with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities.
  • Commitment to indigent defense, racial justice, gender justice, and systemic change.
Applicants, if hired, must:
  • Provide proof of Oklahoma State Bar membership in good standing; or
  • Sit for the Oklahoma State Bar Examination; or
  • Submit the appropriate materials necessary for admission by waiver.
Compensation: $74,000 annually (salary exempt), plus medical, dental, vision, life insurance, FSA, and a 401(k) with a 4% employer contribution. Generous PTO and a supportive supervision structure are provided to support sustainability in this work.
