Cutting Tool Design Engineer

Location: Perrysburg, OH Department: Research & Development (RD01) Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

IMCO Carbide Tool Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Cutting Tool Design Engineer to join our innovative Research & Development team. About the Role

As a Cutting Tool Design Engineer, you will lead the design and development of new cutting tools, enhance existing product lines, and help define the technical standards that keep IMCO at the forefront of machining innovation. You'll collaborate across engineering, technical support, production, and sales to ensure our products deliver unmatched performance and value to our customers.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on handsโ€‘on problem solving, enjoys experimenting with new technologies, and wants to shape the next generation of cutting tool solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new cutting tools with strong market potential.
  • Improve existing products to enhance performance and customer value.
  • Conduct research on cutting tool geometries, materials, coatings, and grinding techniques.
  • Stay current on industry standards and emerging technologies.
  • Benchmark product performance through machine testing in collaboration with Technical Support.
  • Lead and coordinate product development projects from concept through production.
  • Provide technical expertise to internal teams, including marketing, sales, and customer service.
  • Support machining application testing, including feeds, speeds, and tool selection.
  • Serve as a technical ambassador for IMCO products.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and company policies.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Director of Product Development.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years of experience in tool design or a related engineering role.
  • Strong knowledge of CNC machining/grinding, carbide materials, and metallurgy.
  • Understanding of cutting tool geometries, specifications, and coatings.
  • Experience with 3D design software (CIMulator and MasterCam a plus).
  • Familiarity with ISO, OSHA, and other industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, problemโ€‘solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.

Working Conditions

This role involves work in both R&D/production environments and office settings. You may encounter machining oils, grinding dust, chips, and moderate noise levels. Occasional lifting (up to 20 lbs.) and handsโ€‘on tool handling are required.
