What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an icon designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Icon Designer, you need a strong grasp of graphic design principles, vector illustration, and user interface (UI) design, typically supported by a portfolio demonstrating your skills. Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Figma, or Sketch is essential, and knowledge of design systems may be required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret client briefs are crucial soft skills for delivering effective and original icon sets. These skills ensure that icons are visually appealing, functional, and consistent with brand identity, all of which are critical for user experience and communication.

How do icon designers typically collaborate with UI/UX teams during a project?

Icon designers often work closely with UI/UX teams to ensure that the visual language of icons aligns with the overall design system and enhances user experience. This collaboration usually involves participating in design reviews, sharing prototypes, and iterating on icon sets based on feedback from designers and product managers. Clear communication is key, as icon designers must balance aesthetics with functionality, making sure icons are intuitive and accessible for users. Tools like Figma or Sketch are commonly used for collaborative workflows, enabling seamless integration of icon assets within the broader interface.

What is icon design?

Icon design is the process of creating small, visually appealing symbols that represent actions, objects, or ideas in digital interfaces and applications. Icon designers use graphic design principles to convey meaning quickly and clearly, often working with software like Adobe Illustrator or Figma. Good icon design enhances usability and helps users navigate products more efficiently. Icons are used in apps, websites, operating systems, and many types of software to provide intuitive visual cues. Effective icon design balances simplicity, recognizability, and consistency within a larger visual system.

Job description

Do you want to ensure a delightful shopping experience for millions of Amazon.com customers everyday? The Intelligent Cloud Hosting (ICON) team is looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer who is passionate to work on the development of innovative software products which will help boost engineers productivity in Amazon and improving services' posture towards security, availability, efficiency, compliance and maintainability. The team builds systems that apply generative AI and agentic architectures to automate infrastructure operations at scale. We aim to eliminate vast quantities of undifferentiated and often tedious work for Amazon development teams - our opportunity for impact to tens of thousands of developers is enormous.
Key job responsibilities
As a Senior Software Development Engineer in the ICON team, you will be working on the development of next generation managed hosting platform technologies. You will lead the design, implementation, and successful delivery of large-scale services that apply generative AI to automate infrastructure operations. You will be influencing your team's technical and business strategy by making insightful contributions to team priorities and approach. You will work side-by-side and collaborate with strategic technical stakeholders and customers to develop new products that meet the needs of the Amazon e-Commerce platform. You will design and build systems that use generative AI and agentic architectures to solve complex operational problems at scale. You will partner with multiple teams to come up with novel ways to make our retail website more secure and available for Amazon customers. You will solve complex yet fun challenges by looking at the big picture while diving deep.
The right candidate will possess proven software engineering skills, with the experience of creating and launching large scale distributed systems with the help of a team. Experience building production systems that integrate generative AI into real-world workflows is strongly valued. You are expected to be versatile, able to thrive in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment and eager to mentor junior engineers. You are comfortable managing competing priorities and are able to bring order to ambiguous scenarios. Maturity, impeccable judgment, and the ability to influence and lead are essential to success in this role. You are data-driven and analytical. You can clearly and effectively communicate (written as well as verbally) across organizations and up to senior leadership.
What does it take to succeed in this role? You need to be creative, responsible, and able to dig deep into AWS emerging technologies including Bedrock, Step Functions, and generative AI services. You will need to learn existing systems and design integrated systems that combine distributed computing with generative AI to automate operational decisions. You will think about business opportunities, operational issues, architectural improvements, and the customer perspective in the course of a single conversation. You have a deep mastery of programming languages, distributed system design, and performance, and you bring curiosity about applying generative AI to solve real problems at scale.
A day in the life
As a Senior Software Development Engineer on this team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the definition, vision, design, roadmap and development of innovative software products which will help boost engineers productivity in Amazon, for improving services' posture towards security, availability, efficiency, compliance and maintainability. Key responsibilities:
1)Work with the team to help drive business decisions
2)Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative software solutions to drive services optimizations, cost, and security.
3)You provide insightful code reviews and take ownership of outcome.
4)Use software engineering best practices to ensure a high standard of quality for all of the team deliverables
5)Write high quality distributed system software
6)Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.
