How does the ice rink refrigeration system work?

An ice rink refrigeration system, which is a key responsibility for ice rink refrigeration technicians, works by circulating a chilled brine or refrigerant through pipes beneath the ice surface. This process removes heat from the ice, maintaining a consistent, cold temperature that keeps the ice frozen, while a compressor and condenser unit manage the refrigerant cycle. Proper maintenance and understanding of refrigeration components are essential for ensuring optimal ice quality and system efficiency.

To work in ice rink refrigeration, candidates typically need technical skills in HVAC or refrigeration systems, often gained through vocational training or certifications such as EPA refrigerant handling.
