These roles often require specialized skills, certifications, and experience, and can command high compensation in the semiconductor industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ic Layout Contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IC Layout Contract professional, you need strong expertise in analog and digital IC layout, a solid understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes, and relevant education in electrical or electronics engineering. Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, or Synopsys, along with knowledge of DRC/LVS checks, is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are important soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality, manufacturable layouts within project timelines, while collaborating with design and verification teams.

How to get a job in IC design?

To get a job in IC design, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field. Proficiency in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, experience with CAD tools such as Cadence or Synopsys, and a strong understanding of digital or analog circuit design are essential. Internships and hands-on project experience can also improve job prospects.

How much do analog IC design engineers make in the US?

Analog IC design engineers in the US typically earn between $90,000 and $150,000 annually, with experienced professionals and those working in high-demand sectors earning higher salaries. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and company size, and may include bonuses and stock options.

What are the common challenges faced by IC Layout Contract professionals, and how can they overcome them?

IC Layout Contract professionals often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, managing complex design rules, and ensuring accurate communication across multidisciplinary teams. Staying updated with the latest EDA tools and process technology helps address the technical complexities of advanced node designs. Regular collaboration with circuit designers and verification engineers is essential for catching potential errors early and meeting quality standards. Maintaining organized documentation and clear communication channels can streamline workflow and help mitigate common issues. By proactively managing these challenges, layout engineers can consistently deliver reliable and manufacturable designs.

What does an IC layout engineer do?

An IC layout engineer designs the physical layout of integrated circuits, translating circuit schematics into detailed geometric representations for manufacturing. They use CAD tools like Cadence or Synopsys to ensure the layout meets electrical, thermal, and manufacturing specifications. Their work is essential for ensuring chip performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

What is an IC Layout Contract job?

An IC Layout Contract job involves designing and drafting the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) for semiconductor manufacturing. Contractors typically work on short-term or project-based assignments for companies that need custom IC designs. Responsibilities include placing transistors, routing interconnections, and ensuring compliance with design rules. These professionals use industry-standard software like Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys Custom Compiler. Strong knowledge of semiconductor fabrication processes and design constraints is essential.

Job description

Our Goals
ย
At Farcast, we aim to improve global prosperity. We achieve this goal by building innovative products that enable access to information. Satellite internet is one of the most important ways to achieve this goal and to provide global connectivity coverage. However, the capacity of satellite internet services is limited by the quality and affordability of the devices consumers use to connect to satellites. These devices are called "user terminals". Our mission is to bring unprecedented innovation to the user terminal industry.ย
ย
We believe our innovation will be key in making satellite internet accessible to everyone.ย Please join us if your goals align with ours!

We are looking for an Electrical Engineer to make an immediate impact on the design of the Antenna Control Unit (ACU) for a next-generation phased array antenna for satellite communications. As an Electrical Engineer at Farcast, you will be responsible for delivering mixed-signal PCBAs supporting the antenna system. This includes powerelectronics design, digitalinterface implementation (IC, SPI, Ethernet, UART), component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, and boardlevel testing and validation. In this role, you will work closely with a multi-disciplinary engineering team to understand design trade-offs, propose and implement novel solutions, and support the transition to production. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated ownership of the full life cycle of mixed-signal PCBAs, including design, schematic capture, layout, component procurement, and interfacing with contract manufacturers and fab/assembly houses for board production.
Responsibilities
  • Design robust analog, digital, and power management circuit boards, schematics, and layouts suitable for high-volume and low-cost manufacturing
  • Drive system architecture decisions by analyzing powernetwork requirements, thermal constraints, and component options, using structured trade studies to guide highlevel design choices.
  • Ensure successful PCBA manufacturing, including vendor coordination, DFM/DFT implementation, fabrication package release, build oversight, and resolution of assembly or yield issues.
  • Define and run comprehensive PCBA test plans, working closely with embedded software teams and leveraging lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, etc.) to validate functionality and diagnose issues.
Required Experience
  • Strong working knowledge and experience with schematic capture and layout in Altium
  • Experience developing hardware for high-speed data transfer and managing associated timing and signal integrity requirements, including working knowledge of transmission line theory, impedance matching, reflections, crosstalk, and losses
  • Experience designing power management, distribution, and regulation circuitry, and general knowledge of power integrity concepts
  • Familiarity working with Contract Manufacturers for the manufacturing and assembly of PCBAs
  • Strong familiarity with PCBA manufacturing, including DFM/DFA
  • Demonstrated experience with general EE test equipment, including power supplies, loads, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, and soldering equipment
Education
  • Bachelor's in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
What Makes You Stand Out
  • Additional schematic and layout experience using OrCAD / Allegro
  • Familiarity with designing and releasing electronics into large scale production, ensuring manufacturability and cost efficiency
  • Experience in laying out dense BGA components
  • Experience working with GNSS/INS systems, including antennas
Base Salary
  • Final compensation package will include a competitive base salary, meaningful company stock options, and a comprehensive package of cash and non-cash benefits. The final package will be tailored to the candidate's experience, impact, and role scope.
  • Base Salary Range:
$140,000 - $170,000 a year
Offered Benefits
Meaningful company stock ownership
Unlimited PTO plus 20+ days of company shutdown
Parental leave designed by parents for parents
401k with 5% company matching
$13,600 in annual perks (wellness, commute, and meals)
