What is an IC Layout Contract job?

An IC Layout Contract job involves designing and drafting the physical layout of integrated circuits (ICs) for semiconductor manufacturing. Contractors typically work on short-term or project-based assignments for companies that need custom IC designs. Responsibilities include placing transistors, routing interconnections, and ensuring compliance with design rules. These professionals use industry-standard software like Cadence Virtuoso or Synopsys Custom Compiler. Strong knowledge of semiconductor fabrication processes and design constraints is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ic Layout Contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IC Layout Contract professional, you need strong expertise in analog and digital IC layout, a solid understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes, and relevant education in electrical or electronics engineering. Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Mentor Graphics, or Synopsys, along with knowledge of DRC/LVS checks, is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are important soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality, manufacturable layouts within project timelines, while collaborating with design and verification teams.

What are the common challenges faced by IC Layout Contract professionals, and how can they overcome them?

IC Layout Contract professionals often encounter challenges such as tight project deadlines, managing complex design rules, and ensuring accurate communication across multidisciplinary teams. Staying updated with the latest EDA tools and process technology helps address the technical complexities of advanced node designs. Regular collaboration with circuit designers and verification engineers is essential for catching potential errors early and meeting quality standards. Maintaining organized documentation and clear communication channels can streamline workflow and help mitigate common issues. By proactively managing these challenges, layout engineers can consistently deliver reliable and manufacturable designs.

Job description

Position Summary
3dB Labs is a growing Defense Contractor focusing on Digital Signal Processing Software and Hardware with a diverse customer base. We are looking for IC Mission Support Specialist to join our team as we grow and scale our capabilities.
This role would be instrumental in extending the adoption and operational relevance of 3dB Labs products across Conventional Forces and the Intelligence Community. The individual would operate as a technical problem-solver embedded with customer workflows-someone comfortable navigating legacy tools, processes, and institutional constraints while helping design our path forward for IC growth.
Key expectations:
  • Primary role will be to support the IC directly, with Conventional force support as secondary.
  • Fill technical gaps on active IC contracts as required
  • Direct and regular interactions with existing IC customers to build relationships, and solve problems to better understand how best 3dB can cooperatively support their mission moving forward.
  • Act as a force multiplier for Customer Success efforts in Maryland and Virginia.
  • Support Sceptre needs across multiple disciplines, with an emphasis on ELINT and/or COMINT.
  • Engage directly with Fort-based customers, including familiarity with NSA-adjacent offices and processes.
  • Will be focal point of high side communications with our customers as well as field team.
  • Contribute to solution shaping, workflow optimization, and long-term adoption strategies for continued IC growth.

Technical Expertise & Product Familiarity
  • Learn and master SCEPTRE's core mission areas, workflows, and advanced features, including geolocation, collection, and multi-node operations.
  • Assist field team and customers with best practices to get critical SIGINT information into national repositories.
  • Learn Kirby and Monarch operations at a functional depth, including setup, configuration, general troubleshooting, and mission use cases.
  • Understand common customer operational environments and the "why" behind product workflows.
  • Become our customers trusted advisor on 3dB products, capabilities and best practices.
Cross-Team Collaboration
  • While this position will report into the Field Team Director, there will be coordination with MD site lead on IC related tasks and support.
  • Work with the Product Development and QA to ensure documentation aligns with accepted requirements, release content, and expected behavior.
  • Collaborate with the Field Team to validate use-case accuracy (not to write the content for you-just to verify authenticity).
  • Partner with Marketing to ensure layout, style, and branding consistency across all documentation.

Qualifications
Required
  • Background in DSP, SIGINT, EW, RF systems, or similar technical domain-professional, military, academic, or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience working in classified IC related areas.
  • Ability to learn complex hardware/software products (e.g., SCEPTRE-like systems) with minimal hand-holding.
  • Strong writing and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn JICD, SAST, JEL toolchains.
  • Previous experience with COMINT or ELINT collections.
  • Comfort working with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, product, field operations, and marketing.
  • TS/SCI with full scope polygraph (for high side access)

Preferred
  • Familiarity with Linux, Python and RESTful API's for automation, integration, or analysis.
  • Familiarity or past experience using Sceptre.
  • Comfort working in secure, process-heavy environments while driving modernization.
  • Experience utilizing and documenting military, IC, or commercial SIGINT/DSP systems.
  • Hands-on experience with SDRs, RF equipment, or geolocation software.
  • Familiarity with software release processes and version-controlled documentation repositories
