Job Summary:
O'Reilly Auto Parts is a company with a proven track record of growth and stability, and they are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to design, build, and support their enterprise technical infrastructure with a primary focus on the IBM i platform. This role involves developing and implementing solutions to ensure system stability, scalability, security, and performance while supporting evolving business needs.
Responsibilities:
• Support the collection and analysis of business and technical requirements using interviews, document analysis, and workflow evaluations to ensure clear and accurate understanding of system needs.
• Recommend and implement technical enhancements to improve the quality, performance, reliability, and security of applications and supporting infrastructure.
• Document current-state (“as-is”) and future-state (“to-be”) architectures, identifying required changes and contributing to implementation and migration plans.
• Communicate local action plans and align technical activities with broader organizational strategies; support and motivate team members to achieve business objectives.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and assistance to users and internal teams to resolve complex infrastructure and platform-related questions.
• Monitor servers, system configurations, and environments to ensure data integrity, system availability, and software reliability.
• Analyze systems, hardware, and software to proactively identify risks, performance issues, and capacity constraints.
• Provide fault isolation and resolution for complex infrastructure issues, acting as a senior escalation point.
• Open and manage support tickets with third-party vendors as required to resolve platform or infrastructure issues.
• Provide on-call or pager support for assigned areas of responsibility, as needed.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, contributing to assessments of their potential impact or applicability to the organization.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by reviewing existing infrastructure operations and proposing enhancements to processes, tools, and system design.
• Support organizational knowledge management efforts by creating and maintaining technical documentation, procedures, and best practices.
• Develop and maintain technical capabilities through formal training, self-directed learning, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong experience managing, supporting, and troubleshooting IBM i (AS/400) infrastructure environments.
• Proven ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve complex technical problems using established solution frameworks.
• Experience reviewing business and technical requirements and developing appropriate implementation plans.
• Ability to design, execute, and document system and service tests to validate functionality and stability.
• Experience conducting gap analyses and contributing to change strategies and implementation planning.
• Strong understanding of business context, technical architecture, and operational processes, with the ability to document both current and future states.
• Ability to analyze system and performance data, identify trends, and support informed technical decision-making.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• Experience: Experienced practitioner able to work independently on complex systems.
• Leadership: May provide general supervision, guidance, or mentoring to junior team members.
