Job description

HVAC Technician

RoleMission:The HVAC Technician ensures the safe,reliable, and efficient operation of mechanical systems that supportoptimallearning environments across IDEA campuses. This roleis responsible forperforming preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC equipment tomaintainpeak system performance and extend equipment life. The technician works closely with the HVAC Manager and campus staff to plan and complete scheduled maintenance, respond quickly to system outages, and document all work performed. BymaintainingHVAC systems in top condition, the HVAC Technician directly supports IDEA's mission to provide students and staff with comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient spaces conducive to learning.

Supervisory Responsibilities:None

Location:This is a full-time on-site positionlocatedin (Region). Preference will be given to candidates who live in the (Region), or who are willing torelocate.

Travel Expectations:The role requires occasional travel to various regions where weoperate, averaging about once every 3 months for 3 to 5 days. Additionally, frequent daily travel to school sites within the base regions (Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Austin) is expected to oversee and support ongoing preventative maintenance activities.

WhatYou'llDo - Accountabilities

Essential Duties:

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems, including inspection, cleaning, lubrication, filter replacement, and performance checks to ensure reliable and efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and control issues in HVAC systems to restore functionality and minimize equipment downtime.
  • Accurately record all maintenance and repair activities, parts used, and system conditions in service reports and maintenance logs as required by the HVAC Manager.
  • Collaborate with the HVAC Manager andFacilities'team to plan, prioritize, and complete assigned maintenance tasks according to established schedules and standards.
  • Ensure all tools, test instruments, and materials aremaintainedin good condition,properly stored, and used safely during daily operations.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures, building codes, and environmental regulations when performing HVAC maintenance or repairs.
  • Maintain open communication with the HVAC Manager, Facilities Managers, and campus staff to coordinate repairs, provide updates, and ensure work aligns with operational needs.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Planned Maintenance and Projects:
    Support all scheduled preventive maintenance, equipment upgrades, and minor construction tasks to ensure safe and efficient campus operations.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures:
    Adhere to established work routines, task lists, and maintenance standards to ensure consistency, quality, and compliance with departmental protocols.
  • Support Parts and Material Management:
    Communicate material and part needs to the HVAC Manager,assistwith inventory tracking, and ensure proper handling and storage of all supplies and equipment.
  • Provide Accurate Work Order Feedback:
    Record detailed notes on completed tasks, equipment conditions, and follow-up needs to support data accuracy and improve maintenance planning.
  • Assist During System Shutdowns:
    Participate in planned system shutdowns and start-ups, following all safety procedures and ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.
  • Promote Safety and Continuous Improvement:
    Report safety hazards, equipment deficiencies, and process improvement opportunities to the HVAC Manager to support a culture of safety and excellence.
  • Perform Other Related Duties:
    Carry outadditionaltasks or special projects as assigned to support the goals of the HVAC team and the Facilities & Construction department.

RequiredEducation andExperience:

  • High school diploma or GEDrequired
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an HVAC Technician performing installation, maintenance, or repair of commercial HVAC systems.
  • Mustpossessa valid driver's license andmaintainan acceptable driving record.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and/or Building Automation or Management Systems (BAS/BMS).

PreferredEducation and Experience:

  • Completion of a technical or vocational training program in HVAC technology or a related mechanical trade strongly preferred.
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification (Environmental Protection Agency) or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Possession ofadditionaltrade licenses or certifications in HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Capability to work for extended periods in extreme temperature conditions, including environments exceeding 100F.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and reach overheadfrequentlythroughout the workday.
  • Willingness to work after hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed to support maintenance or emergency repairs.
