Job Summary:
The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Instructor โ HVAC provides high-quality classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction within the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program and related Skilled Trades pathways. The instructor prepares students for entry-level employment and career advancement by delivering industry-aligned instruction that develops technical knowledge, practical skills, safe work practices, professionalism, and workforce readiness.
Teaching responsibilities may include refrigeration, HVAC electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, refrigeration controls, piping, sheet metal, mechanical codes, service and repair, and other HVAC-related topics based on program needs and instructor qualifications. The instructor evaluates student learning through classroom instruction, laboratory demonstrations, hands-on skill assessments, and competency-based evaluations while maintaining a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment.
Working collaboratively with the Director of Skilled Trades, faculty, and program leadership, the instructor delivers curriculum aligned with program learning outcomes, Colorado Career and Technical Education standards, and current industry practices. Instructors are expected to model professional workplace behavior, reinforce safety standards, effectively utilize instructional technology, and participate in required meetings, training, and program activities.
This is a temporary, part-time position hired on an as-needed basis. Assignments are based on enrollment, program needs, budget availability, and instructor qualifications, and may include daytime, evening, weekend, hybrid, laboratory, classroom, and occasional off-site instruction. Continued appointments are contingent upon satisfactory performance and ongoing program needs.

Required Qualifications
- Qualifies for post-secondary CTE credential including 4000 non-teaching occupational hours within the last 7 years.

Physical & Cognitive Demands:
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position:
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, climb, and move throughout laboratory and classroom environments.
- Demonstrate HVAC installation, service, troubleshooting, and repair procedures using hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and instructional machinery.
- Frequently lift, carry, move, or position equipment, tools, and instructional materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Operate computers, instructional technology, learning management systems, and standard office equipment.
- Observe laboratory activities, identify safety hazards, and provide immediate instructional direction.
- Apply critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, evaluation, and sound judgment while instructing students and maintaining laboratory safety.
- Effectively communicate technical, instructional, and safety information to students, faculty, staff, and program leadership. People in this position regularly communicate with students, faculty, staff, and program leadership. Must be able to exchange accurate technical, safety, and instructional information in these situations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree or higher in HVAC, HVAC/R, Building Systems Technology, Mechanical Systems, Construction Trades, or a related field.
- One semester of full-time (or equivalent part-time) teaching, training, or technical instruction experience.
- Industry experience in residential, commercial, or industrial HVAC installation, maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Experience teaching, mentoring, supervising apprentices, or providing hands-on technical training.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems, HVAC electrical systems, heating and cooling equipment, controls, piping, sheet metal fabrication, and mechanical codes.
- Experience using HVAC tools, testing equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
- Ability to teach both classroom and laboratory-based HVAC courses using hands-on instructional methods.
- Knowledge of industry safety standards, EPA refrigerant handling requirements, and energy-efficient HVAC practices.
- EPA Section 608 Certification preferred.
- Industry certifications such as NATE, HVAC Excellence, ESCO, NCCER, OSHA, or manufacturer-specific credentials preferred.
- Community college, career and technical education, apprenticeship, or adult education teaching experience preferred.

Advertised Pay
The compensation for this position is $1,660.54 to $1,826.60 per credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA-exempt position, and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
